GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Junior Quinton Hooker registered a triple-double and freshman Adam McDermott erupted for a career-high 28 points to lead North Dakota to a 76-60 victory over Idaho State in Big Sky men's basketball action on Thursday.
UND (11-10, 6-4 BSC) jumped in front of Idaho State (10-11, 5-4 BSC) in the league standings with the victory as the Fighting Hawks finished off the season sweep of the Bengals and snapped their four-game winning streak.
"Obviously, Quinton had a big night with the triple-double and Adam knocked down some rhythm three's and really got us going offensively, but I thought we won this game on the defensive end," UND head coach Brian Jones said. "We held them to 30 percent shooting from the field and this was a team that came in shooting it at a high, high level."
Hooker closed out the first triple-double in UND's Division I history by finding McDermott on the left wing for the freshman's eighth 3-pointer of the game with 90 seconds to play.
Whether Hooker would get the elusive triple-double was about all the drama that was left in a game that saw UND fall behind 2-0, but never trail again.
McDermott broke a 4-4 tie with six quick points off the bench, drilling his first 3-pointer, then convertig a 3-point play on the ensuing possession.
The Bengals, who came in shooting better than 50 percent from the field during their four-game winning streak, went only of 6-of-28 from the field in the first half as UND built a 34-24 lead at the break.
UND put the game away with a 14-4 spurt to open the second half as Hooker buried a pair of 3-pointers during that span.
The 6-foot-guard was also cleaning up the glass with teammate Drick Bernstine as the duo combined for 26 of the team's season-high 29 rebounds.
Hooker had a career-high dozen boards, while Bernstine had 14 to go with 12 points as he became the first player in UND's DI history to register six double-doubles in a season.
Half of Bernstine's career-high equaling rebounds came on the offensive end as the Fighting Hawks had 21 second-chance points.
ISU's Ethan Telfair, who went for 37 in the first meeting between these two teams, was held to 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the floor, while Geno Luzcando, who went 10-for-10 from the field in ISU's last contest, went 2-for-12 and finished with 10 points.
The Bengals managed only a 30.6 percent clip from the field for the game, which was a season-low by a UND opponent, while the Fighting Hawks ended up with a 40.3 percent clip and shot 44.4 percent from beyond the arc (12-for-27).
McDermott's eight 3-pointers (14 attempts) were two shy of the UND single-game record and most since Patrick Mitchell set that mark with 10 against NJIT in 2010.
UND returns to the court on Saturday afternoon against perennial Big Sky power Weber State. Tip-off against the Wildcats is set for 2:05 p.m. CT.
