CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The University of North Dakota softball team dropped its first two games in the first day of competition at the USF Under Amrour Invitational; losing to Central Michigan, 4-0, and Bowling Green, 1-0, Friday morning.
The Fighting Hawks' pitchers threw well enough for UND to compete in both games, however the UND bats were kept quiet on the day, as UND was held to only five hits combined between the two games.
In the first contest of the day against the Chippewas, Hannah Bergh started in the circle for North Dakota and threw her second complete game of the year. She conceded nine hits and four runs in the losing effort, but it would matter little as the Chippewas' pitcher only gave up two hits to keep UND off the board.
Kaylin VanDomelen started for UND in the day's second game limiting Bowling Green to just one run on the day, marking her sixth start of the season in which she has kept the opposition to one run or less. VanDomelen struck out six in the outing, but the Falcons would get their lone run of the day off an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth UND had the tying run in scoring position, but was unable to capitalize on the situation and instead entered began the fifth with the 1-0 deficit.
North Dakota had another chance to tie the game up in the bottom of the seventh. With one away, Deja Miller advanced to third on a grounder to second by Mary Martin. Unfortunately, the Falcons got an infield fly in the next at bat to end claim the 1-0 victory.
Taylor Hansen led UND with a .33 average on the day, earning two hits, including one double, in six at-bats. Nicole Babrowski, Rachael Waynick and VanDomelen each had one hit for North Dakota. Additionally, Babrowski earned three walks on the day to record an on-base percentage of .571. She also was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
North Dakota returns to the diamond tomorrow morning to take on U-Mass Lowell at 8:15 a.m. (CT), before playing against Army at 1 p.m.
