BROOKINGS, S.D.-- North Dakota's bench provided a huge lift Wednesday evening in a 3-1 win at host South Dakota State in non-conference play. UND generated a season-high 16 blocks as a team while back-row players Tamika Brekke (18 digs) and Teo Tepavac (17 digs) each produced season highs in digs for the Fighting Hawks.
Senior Chelsea Moser had a dozen kills while junior Faith Dooley had seven kills and 10 total blocks. Junior Sydney Griffin etched another double-double with 42 assists and 13 digs.
UND (7-5) had to rally from a 1-0 deficit in the match after the Jacks (1-11) sneaked out a 26-24 win in the first. North Dakota held off SDSU in the second with a 25-23 win before steam-rolling to comfy wins in the third and fourth sets to garner the victory.
"Tonight was a tale of two separate matches," UND head coach Mark Pryor said. "The first two sets, we just didn't have it. We just didn't commit to playing solid defense and it cost us a set and could have easily cost us two. In sets three and four, we made a choice to compete harder. When you actively choose to compete, good things happen.
"Grace Bettenga, Julia Kaczorowska, Denae Dominguez and Tamika Brekke all provided great energy for us tonight and we needed it in a bad way. We are very lucky to have some depth to help us out when things don't go right. That bench will come in handy once conference season starts."
Bettenga had eight kills and four blocks while Kaczorowska added five kills without an error in the final two sets combined. Dominguez tallied 10 digs to compliment Brekke's career night, a match in which she surpassed her season-high for digs by 10.
North Dakota (7-5) has now won five of its last six matches overall this season and ran its record to 7-1 against SDSU in the Division I era with the win.
UND will battle third-ranked Minnesota Friday in the opener of the Diet Coke Classic. North Dakota draws Green Bay and Toledo to close out the tourney on Saturday.
