CHENEY, Wash.-- North Dakota completed a weekend road sweep with a 3-1 win (27-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21) at Eastern Washington Friday night in Big Sky Conference play. UND remains atop the Big Sky North Division with the win.
"Rarely when your opponent out-digs you by six and when your opponent has 23 more kills than you do you get a win," UND head coach Mark Pryor admitted. "We won this match becasue these young women made a conscious decision to be low-error. We only had 19 hitting errors in a four-set match-- that was the stat line of the match.
"Neither team was an offensive juggernaut tonight, but we got the 'W' because we just stayed consistent. That's a big step for us."
While UND (11-8, 3-1 Big Sky) had 19 attack errors, Eastern Washington (7-6, 2-2) committed 41 as a team, 16 of those thanks to North Dakota blocks. Eight of those blocks came from junior Faith Dooley, who added a team-high 10 kills as well to pace North Dakota. Redshirt Alivia Fraase, who registered a career-high 30 digs in Thursday's win at Idaho, produced 26 tonight while Tamara Merseli tallied 23 digs for UND.
UND took a tight first set, 27-25, then got out to a two sets to none lead with another close win in the second, 25-22. EWU came out of the intermission with a 25-20 victory in the third set but UND took over from there. In the fourth, sophomore Grace Bettenga had a kill a posted a pair of blocks in the early going, helping the road team get out to a 7-1 start to force an Eagle timeout. Junior Sydney Griffin added a service ace and North Dakota was on its way to its eighth win away from home already this season.
Griffin finished the night with 32 assists while Ashley Brueggeman chipped in nine kills. Merseli had eight kills to go along with her 23 digs.
North Dakota, who has played 12 of its last 13 matches away from home, will return to the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center for the next four. UND hosts Sacramento State next Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. start on FOX Sports North.
