Vaulters lead as Fighting Hawks continue to soar

FARGO, N.D. - - Day two of North Dakota State's Bison Open proved to be just as exciting for the University of North Dakota as the first day.

Leading the charge for the women was Kyley Foster in the pole vault. Foster's clear of 12 feet, 9.50 inches (3.90) tied the school record, which was set by Jessica Clausnitzer in 2008. The mark was also an all-time personal best.

Foster, along with Klara Lyon (North Dakota State), and Anna Benke (Unattached), all successfully cleared 12-05.50 (3.80). With no successful clears at 13-00, the three went into a jump-off. Foster was the only one to make it at 12-09.50 (3.90), earning her the event title. Foster now holds the third spot in the Big Sky Conference.

“The pole vault came down to a jump-off and that was really exciting,” said jumps coach Joe Silvers. “Kyley performed really well and made a good run for 13 feet.”

Also in the pole vault, freshman Mikayla Johnson earned a season-best with her clear of 11-05.75 (3.50).

Freshman Isabel Waite tied her personal record in the high jump with a mark of 5-04.25 (1.63).

Katelyn Weber improved her second-place standing in the UND history books with a personal-record shot put throw of 47-05.75 (14.47). She leads the Big Sky Conference and continues to distance herself from her closest competitor.

On the track, Kylie Alexander earned a place in 60-meter UND history. Her time of 8.03 seconds earned her the fifth spot in the record books.

Zac Ray earned an event title and a personal record, proving he is one to watch on the men's side. With a clear of 15-07 (4.75), Ray moves to the sixth spot in UND pole vault history. He also holds the third spot in the conference.

“Zac had some good looks at 16-01,” said Silvers. “He is fun to watch as we head into the conference meet and we think he has the potential to place highly.”

Also on the men's side, senior Drew Campbell earned an all-time best in the 3,000-meter,clocking a run of 8:39.60. His time earned him the seventh-place in UND history.

“We are starting to even out as a team,” said head coach Kevin Galbraith. “We are looking better and that's exciting to see as we get closer to the conference meet.”

The Fighting Hawks are set to compete again Feb. 10th and 11th at the South Dakota State Indoor Classic.
