Time for an update on the quarterback competition-- and it's been a healthy one thus far. The job is expected to become a three-man race with incumbent
Andrew Zimmerman (who threw 41 passes last season in relief of
Keaton Studsrud), junior Sacramento State transfer
Nate Ketteringham and redshirt freshman
Brock Boltmann all vying for snaps with the ones. Offensive coordinator
Paul Rudolph gives us an update on the competition, the strengths of each guy and what he's looking for one of them to get a leg up in the race. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
MORE OBSERVATIONS FROM FALL CAMP FRIDAY
*Hottest session of the fall camp with temps pushing 80s even early in the practice with little wind.Â
*Got a chance to see more special teams with newcomers at each spot.
Cade Peterson and Warren Taylor each got to handle some punt work while
Brady Leach banged home a few field goals during the session. All three of those players and new long-snapper
Ross Hinders make up a group with no game experience and will be relied upon to jump right into starting roles once the season starts. Â Â Â
*
Noah Grover and
Brock Boltmann each got extended time in situational drills with different formations. The quarterback's elusiveness could be a big key in who gets slotted where in the depth chart. Each of these guys had specific plays that appeared to be designed runs or RPOs, putting another wrinkle into the offense for this season.Â
*Grover threw a great deep ball over the middle that had good touch on it and settled into the hands of
Alex Cloyd for a score.
*
Hayden Blubaugh made a nice diving pass-breakup in 11-11. Those cornerbacks (
Deion Harris and
Evan Holm returning from injury) along with
Tyus Carter will be key to UND's defense and that Ball Hawk mentality that was so prevalant in 2016.Â
*The team took Saturday off from practice, but continued with meetings and had a team activity before returning to the practice field Sunday morning.Â
