GRAND FORKS, N.D. - In the Bronson Field finale, the University of North women's soccer team scored five goals in the second half against Omaha to record the program's first 10-win season in the Division I era. The Fighting Hawks 5-2 victory improved the team to 10-6-1 while the Mavericks fell to 5-11-1.
UND last registered 10-wins in 2006 as an NCAA Division II affiliate and a member of the North Central Conference. It is the seventh time in the program's 21-year history that it's won at least 10 matches.
Freshman goalkeeper
Hallie Byzewski (1-0-0) made her first career appearance for UND, playing the full 90 minutes, making two saves between the sticks.
Mara Yapello led all goal scorers with a goal and two assists while
Megan Wright, who scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute, accounted for a goal and an assist.
Omaha, who finished the match with four shots on goal, opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Sydney Randall fired a shot towards goal. The ball slipped through the hands of Byzewski, who was forced to make a jump for it on her goal line to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
The Fighting Hawks opened the second with vigor, threading long passes up the wing and pressuring the Omaha defense. UND equalized in the 59th minute as
Ashley Ebeling volleyed a shot into the net and claimed the lead three minutes later as Wright lasered a ball into the far net on a dish from
Karleen Yapello.
With Omaha pushing numbers forward, the Hawks continued to attack as
Mara Yapello scored the third goal, and
Olivia Knox added the fourth. While the Mavericks cut their deficit in half in the 76th minute on a Laurin Mertz goal,
Mimi Eiden scored her eighth goal of the season to close the scoring register in the 84th minute.
The University of North Dakota will close the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 31, when it takes on rival North Dakota State at Dacotah Field in Fargo.
The matchup could determine both teams' Summit League Tournament fate as a win for UND seals the program's first conference tournament berth as an eligible NCAA Tournament participant. A loss or a tie to the Bison could also clinch the Fighting Hawks first Summit League Tournament berth, however, results around the league would dictate North Dakota's final place in the standings.
