GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota's Division I leader in career sacks can now add All-American to his title, as
Mason Bennett was selected to the Associated Press FCS All-American Third Team on Tuesday.
Â
The senior joins fellow defensive teammate
Donnell Rodgers in receiving an All-America distinction this season, becoming the first teammates since the 2016 season to each earn the honor.
Â
Bennett also becomes the first defensive lineman in UND's Division I era (2008-present) to be named an All-American, joining Adam Wolff (2006), Ben Dixon (2001), and Scott Schultz (2000) as players from that position group to earn the title since 2000.
Â
The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native was limited to just 10 games this season due to injury, but still managed to lead the Fighting Hawks in sacks (5.5) and quarterback hurries (5) while finishing tied for second on the team in tackles for loss (6.5). He returned from injury on Nov. 16 and didn't miss a beat, recording five TFLs, four sacks, two quarterback hurries, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble over that three-game stretch. For his career, Bennett finished as the top sack artist in UND's DI history and second all-time with 20.0.
Â
Bennett was most recently ranked eighth in the Canadian Football League prospect rankings for the upcoming 2020 draft. Â
