Detloff and Foster Earn NCAA Indoor Championship Bids

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The rewriting of UND records and an individual champion highlighted the University of North Dakota's first-ever Summit League Championship last weekend, but on Tuesday night, the storyline changed. As a result of Molli Detloff's (weight throw) and Kyley Foster's (pole vault) performances at the meet, the Fighting Hawk duo received invitations to the NCAA Division I Indoor Championship.

Detloff and Foster will be the first UND athletes to compete at the meet in the University's Division I era. The competition will be held March 8 and 9 in Birmingham, Ala.

Detloff, an All-American in the hammer throw in 2017, finished runner-up in Friday's weight throw competition with a personal-best toss of 72-1.75 (21.99m). The Elk River, Minn., native is the only thrower in program history – man or woman – to ever surpass the 70-foot mark in the event. Detloff currently ranks 11th in the NCAA in the event.

"(To qualify for) the indoor championship is special. It's a descending order list, and there's no qualification meet for it. It's just flat out 'are you in the top-16 in the country?'" said Throws Coach Drew Jones. "It means a lot because she's done everything we've asked her to do. She never questions it. To see her believe and trust in the process has been huge. There are many women on that list who've accomplished a lot earlier in their career so for Molli to work herself into that place is special. We could go another 20 years and not have another athlete qualify for the meet. It's that hard."

North Dakota's first-ever Summit League Champion, Foster, won the women's pole vault on Saturday with a height of 14-2.75 (4.34m) to become the first UND athlete to clear 14 feet. Foster entered the meet second in the conference and with a personal-best of 13-7 (4.14m). The Detroit Lakes, Minn., native is tied for the 12th in the NCAA.

"Kyley has certainly had a historic season when it comes to UND Track and Field," said Jumps Coach Dan McCarthy. "Kyley came into the meet with one goal, and that was to clear over 14 feet and put herself into a position to qualify for the indoor championship. It was truly an incredible experience to see such a lofty goal come to fruition. Kyley is the true embodiment of what a student-athlete should strive to be. She maintains an excellent grade point average, she's a leader on our team and in the community and comes to practice every day with a positive attitude. She does everything to the best of her ability."

Future updates on the championship and start times will be announced soon. Stay tuned for FightingHawks.com for future updates and stories. To view the complete accepted entry list, follow this link.
