UND drops season finale at Chicago State

Fighting Hawks end season with 11-12 record

Box Score CHICAGO -- Closing out the best season in the program's Division I history, the University of North Dakota men's tennis team fell, 4-3, at Chicago State on Easter Sunday in the Windy City.

UND ends the season with an 11-12 mark, as the 11 victories were the most since reaching the DI level and are a seven-win improvement from a season ago. The Fighting Hawks also finished just one match shy of reaching postseason play for the first time in the current era of men's tennis.

Chicago State jumped out to the early 1-0 lead thanks to back-to-back victories on the top pair of courts in doubles play. The duo of Chuck Tang and Jake Kuhlman earned an automatic win by walkover due to an unfilled lineup by the Cougars.

In singles play, both sides took home three match victories, but Chicago State's important doubles win proved to be the difference in the contest. Alex Reinke was also awarded a triumph on the No. 6 court due to an unfilled lineup to tie the match at 1-1 before Kuhlman gave the Fighting Hawks a brief 2-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the fifth position.

Chicago State answered back with a pair of wins on the No. 3 and No. 4 courts to regain the advantage, 3-2, before Nejc Sitar brought the contest to a 3-3 deadlock with a 7-5, 6-2 triumph from the top position to turn all eyes towards the second court. There, Lukas Buth won the second set, 7-5, but ultimately fell in three frames to give the Cougars the win.
