CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite one-v-one scoring opportunities in the first half, the University of North Dakota soccer team (2-1-1) fell to The Citadel (2-0-1) after a 51st-minute goal by Logan Dix, 1-0.
The Fighting Hawks found themselves defending early in the contest, including a corner kick in the 15th minute. While the UND defense methodically broke down the Cadets attack, and built offensively from goal, the Fighting Hawks offense had its chances on net.
Mimi Eiden began the dangerous attack as she forced Citadel keeper Maddie Somogyi to punch an ambitious ball from range over the net to earn a UND corner.
Bailey McNitt, who made her first career start, created a one-v-one chance on goal in the 21st minute. However, a heavy touch just outside the 18-yard box allowed the Somogyi to come off her line and attack the ball before McNitt could attempt to slip the ball past her.
Cassie Giddings had a similar opportunity shortly after McNitt's attempt, but the ball sailed wide of the net before testing the keeper.
In net,
Catherine Klein recorded five saves on the afternoon against The Citadel.
The Fighting Hawks will return to action Friday, Sept. 6 when it hosts Chicago State at 3 p.m. Central. Senior Day festivities will take place in a postgame ceremony, honoring Klein,
Kaylee Kebba and
Karleen Yapello.
