GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Playing their third consecutive weekend on the road, the North Dakota volleyball team will head to North Carolina this week for four matches starting Thursday at North Carolina Central.
After the match in Durham, the Fighting Hawks will head to Buies Creek, N.C. for Campbell's Comfort Inn Fuquay Invitational, taking on the Camels, The Citadel and South Carolina State.
The Fighting Hawks finished 1-3 in Rhode Island last weekend, battling to at least four sets in the final two matches of the weekend. Falling back 2-0 against Marist on Saturday morning, North Dakota rallied back to win in five sets over the Red Foxes.
Led by
Ashley Brueggeman (17 kills) and
Lydia Rutten (10 kills) on the attack,
Lexi Ahrens made her presence felt at the net as she posted six blocks in her return to the lineup. UND completed the comeback after dropping the second set, 25-7.
Freshman
Abi McGlynn was also a key contributor in the comeback over the Red Foxes. After burning her redshirt the night before, McGlynn amassed six kills, two service aces and a block in her first extended action.
North Carolina Central currently owns an 0-7 record, playing locally against teams in both North and South Carolina. The Eagles hosted Elon on Tuesday, Sept. 11 and fell in three sets. Christine Alcox and Arianda Faulkner lead the attack with kill averages of 2.59 and 2.32 per set, respectively.
The season is young for The Citadel as they opened 2019 last weekend with a 1-2 clip, claiming its lone win over Saint Francis (Pa.) in four. Mellanie King averaged 3.00 kills per set over the weekend, hitting .167, while Maddy Cardenas added 2.38 per frame.
The host Camels are 2-4 with a pair of victories over North Carolina Central. Campbell opened the season at Mercer with losses to Georgia Southern, Nicholls State, and the host Bears. Outside hitter Sarah Colla has posted an outstanding 101 kills (4.39/s) this season with a .244 hitting percentage.
Finally, South Carolina State enters the weekend with an 0-8 clip and have not won a set this season. The Bulldogs took on UNC Ashville on Tuesday and previously traveled to Greensboro for the Coastal Carolina Tournament. Alexus Holt has registered 2.76 kills per set this season with a .078 hitting percentage.
The University of North Dakota will return home next weekend when it hosts Akron, Eastern Washington and Lamar in the UND Classic Sept. 19-21.
