Steinmeyer Sets School Record, Cruises To Victory While Three Additional Hawks Win at SDSU Indoor Classic

Time of 54.94 is Meet Record and 49th in the NCAA
Brookings, S.D. – A top 50 national mark, a school record and four event titles headline North Dakota's performances at the South Dakota State University Indoor Classic today.

Senior Lucy Steinmeyer, the reigning Summit League Indoor 400m Champion cut more than a second off her personal record en route to crushing the field in the 400m with a time of 54.94.  That time is 49th best in the country and is the fastest indoor 400m time in school history.  She won the event by more than two-and-a-half seconds.  Steinmeyer's previous personal record was 56.15 which she set last year in Fort Wayne, Ind. at The Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships on her way to conference gold.  Steinmeyer's performance is the only one under 55 seconds in school history.  The previous record was Stephanie Clarke who ran 55.01 at the 2014 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships in Pocatello, Idaho.

Destinee Rose-Haas continues her dominant season as the junior won the weight throw for the second time in as many tries in the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex this season.  Rose-Haas' winning mark of 19.80m (64-11.5) was shy of her personal record, but still good enough to claim victory today.  She continues to lead The Summit League and be among the nation's leaders in the event with her throw of 20.55m (67-5.25) last week in Fargo, N.D. which ranks 21st in the country.  Rose-Haas will look to return to the same building in Brookings in two weeks and win the event for the third time, which would be a more significant victory because that would be at The Summit League Indoor Championships.

Junior Jennifer Parent continues her fantastic season winning the pole vault with a jump of 3.70m (12-1.75) .  She also finished third in the long jump with a personal record mark of 5.60m (18-4.25) which puts her in sole possession of 6th place in The Summit League in addition to improving to fourth all-time in the event at UND.

Jack Vetsch won the 60m hurdles with a personal record time of 8.21.  That time puts the junior in sole possession of fourth place on the all-time UND top 10 list and also fourth in The Summit League this season.

Second place finishes belong to Erica Benson (1.68m, 5-6.25) in the high jump and the women's 1600m relay.  The relay team of Mackenzie Severson, Maddie Jerome, Conny Wohlfahrt, and Steinmeyer clock a time of 3:53.51 which ranks seventh in school history.

In the men's 3000m, Sophomore Patrick Kipkomboi and freshman Nick Oak cracked the all-time UND top ten with times of 8:26.43 and 8:39.78 respectively to finish fourth and seventh.  Kipkomboi moves into second on the list and trails only school record holder Josh LaBlanc who ran 8:19.69 at Iowa State in 2011.  Oak is now number ten on the list.

Freshman Garrett Shumski recorded a personal record 17.57m (57-7.75) in the weight throw climbing to eighth all-all time at UND on his way to a fourth place finish today.  Shumski was the top underclassman in the event.

McKenzie Burian finished sixth in a 3000m personal best running 10:03.79.  The sophomore from Fargo, N.D. is now ninth in program history.

Other notable personal records belong to:
  • Senior Peter Wysocki who ran 7.24 in the 60m prelims and followed it with a 7.20 in the final for two PRs in the same day, in the same event.
  • Sophomore Mackenzie Severson finished the 400m in 58.70.
  • Senior Amanda Robbins ran the 800m in a personal best 2:16.67.
  • Sophomore Max Baker ran the 400m in 50.35.
  • Junior Kendra Franck ran 5:09.71 and Freshman Mikayla Weiss won her section in 5:15.05 in the mile.
  • Freshman Alec Nelson ran 15:23 in his collegiate 5000m debut.
Both the men's team and the women's team finish fourth overall out of eight and nine teams respectively as the Hawks build toward The Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships in two weeks.  Both the North Dakota men and women return home next week for the UND Tune-Up in the High Performance Center next Saturday, February 20.  Fans will not be allowed due to COVID-19 protocol but the event will be streamed with multiple cameras, results integrated with HerosTiming.com and the sound from the public address announcer included.  Live results will be available at HerosTiming.com.
