School Records Tied To Silver Medals The Story For On Day Two At The Summit League Indoor Championships

Lucy Steinmeyer, Jack Vetsch, Patrick Kipkemboi All Break School Records Bringing Home Silver Medals

Lucy Steinmeyer Breaks Her Own School 400m Record At The Summit League Indoor Championships
Brookings, S.D. – School records connected to silver medals was the theme for North Dakota at The Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships presented by the U.S. Air Force Special Warfare.

Senior Lucy Steinmeyer, junior Jack Vetsch, and sophomore Patrick Kipkemboi turned in memorable chart topping performances to claim second place finishes in their respective events after watching teammates Erica Benson and the men's distance medley relay team do the same yesterday.

Steinmeyer bested her
previous 400m school record which she tied yesterday by exactly half a second, clocking a 54.94.  Despite running seven-tenths of a second faster than she did last year to claim gold, the defending champion settled for silver while posting the 57th fastest time in the country this year.

Vetsch
smashed his own school record in the pentathlon by scoring 5,339 after a strong second day winning the 60m hurdles and the 1000m.  Vetsch set a PR in the pole vault clearing 4.20m (13-9.5) boosting him above 5000 points – something no other multi-eventer in the history of the program can say.

In the 5000m Kipkemboi laid back for most of the race before taking the lead inside the final mile.  He earned a silver medal in an all-time UND best 14:32.59.  It was his first effort at that distance in a Fighting Hawk uniform.  The previous school record was held by Josh Lablanc and stood for ten years.

Five Fighting Hawks earned all-conference honors by finishing in the top three in their events: The Hawks had 20 other scoring occurrences:
The Fighting Hawk women finished fourth while the men finished fifth.
