Tom Boysen Tabbed Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach

Boysen Brings Experience in the Big Ten, SEC and Ivy League to North Dakota

Tom Boysen Named Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Collegiate and professional tennis coaching veteran Tom Boysen was named head men's and women's tennis coach at the University of North Dakota on July 13, 2021.

Most recently at the University of Nebraska as an assistant with the Husker men's program, Boysen brings more than a decade of NCAA Division I coaching experience to Grand Forks in addition to three years traveling the world as a coach and manager.

"We look forward to welcoming Coach Boysen into the UND family," North Dakota Director of Athletics Bill Chaves said. "Tom's background at several Division I institutions will no doubt serve both of our tennis teams very well moving forward. I would also like to recognize associate athletics director Erik Martinson, who did a fantastic job chairing this highly competitive search."

In the collegiate setting, Boysen has coached at Vanderbilt, Dartmouth and Nebraska. In 2016, while at Dartmouth, he was named ITA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year when the Big Green finished runner-up in the Ivy League. Furthermore, in all five of his years with the Commodores, Vanderbilt finished the season in the national rankings while competing in the NCAA tournament on three occasions.  In singles play at Vanderbilt, Boysen helped two student-athletes advance to the NCAA tournament four times.

"First and foremost I'd like to thank Director of Athletics Bill Chaves and associate athletics director Erik Martinson for putting their faith in me to lead the tennis program here at the University of North Dakota," Boysen said. "Throughout this process, I came to know how truly special the athletic department is here. I am very honored, excited and humbled to be the next head tennis coach. I am thrilled associate head coach Kyle Anderson has agreed to stay on with the program and I am eager to get started with him. With the numerous amazing resources already in place here, I know that big things are in store for the program.  I am so happy to be a member of this wonderful Grand Forks community. Go Hawks!"

Prior to his time coaching at the college level, Boysen spent three seasons as a traveling coach and manager working with a quartet of professionals, one of which – Scott Lipsky -  won the 2011 French Open Mixed Doubles Championship.  In 2007, Lipsky and Martin reached the round of 16 in doubles at Wimbledon, the semis at Newport and the finals at the Countrywide Classis in Los Angeles. Boysen also mentored Todd Widom, who was ranked as high as No. 200 in the ATP standings and competed in three U.S. Open qualifying draws, and Andrews Pedroso at the professional level.

"Tom is a great teacher of tennis and life and he is one of the best people in our industry," Vanderbilt head tennis coach Ian Duvenhage said.  "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to North Dakota and the men's and women's programs will benefit greatly from his enthusiasm and work ethic."

Boysen coached prep-level tennis at the Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville for four years, leading the team to Tennessee State Championships in his first two seasons, 2011 and 2012.

"Tom is going to a great job elevating the program at North Dakota," Nebraska Head Men's Tennis Coach Sean Maymi said,  "His ability to connect with the players and motivate them is going to really make a difference on and off the court.  I am thankful I had a chance to work with Tom but do believe this is a great fit for him and The University of North Dakota."

Boysen succeeds University of North Dakota hall of famer, Tom Wynne, who recently retired after his 30th season leading the UND tennis program.

Boysen played collegiately at the University of Central Florida where he graduated in 1992.
