Fighting Hawks cruise into win column with 7-0 victory

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season, defeating Eastern Illinois by a 7-0 score on Saturday afternoon from Milwaukee, Wis.

UND (1-4) captured all but two sets in the match to pick up the first triumph of the 2022 campaign and close the weekend with a 1-1 mark.

In doubles action, the duo of Charlotte Bowles and Nore Heinitz made quick work of their opponent on the No. 3 court with a 6-0 victory before Sapir Sela and Andrea Jansson did the same from the top spot to quickly earn UND a 1-0 lead. Allie Ochotorena and Lucia Rizza made it a perfect night in two-person action at the second position by a 6-3 score.

The momentum carried into singles play, with Angela Georgieva cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 blanking on the bottom court to push the lead to 2-0 in favor of the green and white. Rizza nearly followed suit, but settled for a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at the No. 5 position to put the match within clinching.

Fellow freshman Heinitz put the match away on the fourth court, posting consecutive 6-3 scores to seal the victory with the fourth point of the afternoon. Jansson and Sela both picked up wins on the top-two courts in three sets, with Sela rallying from a 6-4 defeat in the first frames to comeback for the 6-4, 10-8 triumph. Jansson claimed her first set by a 6-1 score before a 6-3 loss in the second pushed the match to a tiebreaker. There, the Swede made it 6-0 for UND with a 10-4 win.

Ochotorena put the finishing touches on a near-perfect day to the courts for the Fighting Hawks, gutting out a 6-4, 7-6 triumph at the No. 3 spot to cement the 7-0 win.

North Dakota heads to Minnesota next weekend for a showdown with the Golden Gophers on Friday and Northern Iowa on Saturday.
