Fighting Hawks Sweep on Second Day of Furman Classic

Defeat Bellarmine 4-2, Defeat Maryland Eastern Shore 7-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The University of North Dakota softball team won a pair of contests in the second day of action at the Furman Classic in Greenville, S.C.

It was another long day for the Fighting Hawks (2-2), who began the day at 10:30 a.m. with a rematch against the Knights. North Dakota then closed out the day against  Maryland Eastern Shore with a start around 1 p.m.

Bellarmine 2, North Dakota 4
The Fighting Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first three innings, Chevelle Sartin scored the fourth run off of a wild pitch in the fourth innings to help them defeat Bellarmine, 4-1.

North Dakota was up to bat first, and the top of the order started off strong as Jocelyn Kirk singled for the first at bat of the game and advanced on fielder's choice. Mariah Peters and Madison Pederson end up going for back-to-back RBI doubles to end the top of the first with a two-run advantage (2-0).

In her first career start, Jackie Albrecht and the Fighting Hawks have a 1-2-3 inning with a ground out, stoke out, and line out. This ends the first inning with Bellarmine remaining scoreless.

The second inning went scoreless for both teams. North Dakota extended the lead at the top of the third. Peters was walked to first and ends up advancing on fielder's choice. Cassie Castaneda steps up to the plate and hits an RBI double to score add a run for the Hawks. Bellarmine was kept scoreless once more at the bottom of the third as Albrecht secured three strikeouts in the first three innings.

The fourth inning saw more action from the Fighting Hawks batting order as Sartin doubled to center. Priscilla Gresham hit a sacrificial bunt to advance the runner to third. This placed Sartin in prime scoring position as she scored the fourth and final run for the Hawks off a wild pitch. North Dakota once more had a 1-2-3 inning to maintain the four-run advantage.

The Fighting Hawks would remain scoreless for the remaining three innings, but on defense they were able to secure another 1-2-3 inning as Albrecht picked up two more strikeouts at the bottom of the fifth. They were able to keep Bellarmine off the board in the sixth with a fly out, strikeout, walk, and ground out.

Bellarmine cracked through in the seventh inning as one batter made it on base. They then had two outs, but the Knights managed to squeeze out a two-run home run to cut the deficit to two. Albrecht secured the third out for the Fighting Hawks as the batter struck out swinging.

Albrecht pitched 7.0 innings. She had seven total strikeouts to end the morning. Albrecht had a two-hit, two-run game to give her the first win of her career and the first win of the season for the Fighting Hawks (4-2).

North Dakota 7, Maryland Eastern Shore 2
After jumping out to a 5-0 lead after four innings, Mariah Peters had an RBI single at the bottom of the sixth to defeat MES, 7-2.

Jannay Jones was solid in the circle with a complete-game victory. The senior allowed just nine hits and two earned runs while striking out four to move to 1-1 on the season. 

Both teams ended the first inning scoreless, but the Fighting Hawks struck first at the bottom of the second. Madi Moore doubled to center, and Callie Honig moved Moore to third on fielder's choice. The Fighting Hawks brought Moore in for the run on a fielder's choice by Sartin to give them the one-run advantage.

North Dakota managed to break through once more at the bottom of the fourth as they made it through the entire batting line-up. The Fighting Hawks started with a Madison Pederson double, and she is moved to third as Cassie Castaneda hits a single. Moore hits an RBI single to make the score 2-0 with the run made by Jagger Datan. Honig steps up to the plate and hits a single to load the bases with no outs recorded. Sartin hits an RBI double to bring Castaneda in and give them a 3-0 lead. Priscilla Gresham steps up and nails an RBI double. This brings in Honig and Moore to put the Hawks up 5-0. Maryland Eastern Shore is able to recover on defense and stop the Hawks from scoring more runs.

The MES Hawks chipped away with two runs at the top of the fifth to bring the game within three runs. North Dakota extended the lead to five runs once again at the bottom of the sixth. Jocelyn Kirk and Alexys Campos brought in the final runs for the Fighting Hawks to give them a 7-2 win over the MES Hawks.

North Dakota returns to action tomorrow with one final contest against Tarleton State at 8 a.m.
