Box Score 2 HONOLULU, HAWAII -- The University of North Dakota split on the second day of the Hawai'i Invitational. They won the first day of the game 6-4 against Montana before dropping the contest 3-1 against Hawai'i.
North Dakota 6, Montana 4
The Fighting Hawks trailed early with Montana taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but North Dakota was able to rally and take the lead in the third inning and extended it as the game continued. They finalized the 6-4 win with two runs in the fifth.
Jackie Albrecht started on the mound for North Dakota and secured two strikeouts and allowed one run. She finished with a no decision as
Lauren Feld came into pitch in the second inning. Feld pitched for the win in her 4.0 frames of work. She had a two-hit, three-run game with one strike out.
Jannay Jones entered the game for the final two innings and had the save. She allowed two hits, no runs and had one strike out.
After trailing 1-0 since the first inning, the top of the batting order brought the heat in the bottom of the third to put the Hawks on the board.
Jocelyn Kirk singled to second base and was followed by
Alexys Campos who singled to third base advancing Kirk to third.
Mariah Peters secured the RBI as she singled to right field to bring in Kirk. It was
Cassie Castaneda who secured the second RBI and brought in Campos to give the Fighting Hawks the 2-1 lead.
The Grizzlies did not take long to respond as they scored a run at the top of the fourth to tie it at two each. North Dakota kept the momentum from the third inning going as
Chevelle Sartin advanced into scoring position with two outs. Kirk stepped up to hit and singled to third base to pick-up an RBI and bring in Sartin. Kirk then stole second as Campos stepped up and singled down the left field line to bring in Kirk and gain the RBI. The Fighting Hawks led 4-2 at the end of the fourth.
The Grizzlies continued to battle with for the advantage as they tied it (4-4) once more with two runs at the top of the fifth. North Dakota once again responded with a pair of runs. The Grizzlies secured two outs early, but Sartin was walked to put her on base. This time, it was
Liz Feld who stepped up to hit and singled through the right side to advance Sartin.
Morgan Flann stepped into pinch run for Sartin as
Angie Dumlao stepped in and singled down the right field line to gain an RBI and bring in Flann. Kirk secured a second RBI as she singled down the left side to bring in Feld and give the Hawks a two-run advantage (6-4).
Jones and the Fighting Hawks defense secured the 6-4 win as the Grizzlies remained scoreless in the six and seventh innings.
Hawai'i 3, North Dakota 1
It was a duel as the Fighting Hawks faced the host, the Rainbow Wahine. North Dakota battled, but they fell to Hawai'i who won 3-1.
Morgan McConnell pitched 3.2 innings. She allowed six hits and three runs.
Jackie Albrecht stepped in as relief. In her 2.1 frames of works she allowed not runs and two hits.
The first three frames saw Hawai'i and North Dakota both secure hits, but no one could secure the first run. The Rainbow Wahine were the first to place a runner on base with a double to left field in the first inning, but the Fighting Hawks defense locked it down and did not allow another hit in the first. North Dakota could not secure a runner on base until the fourth, but they were unable to score.
It was not until the bottom of the fourth when Hawai'i secured the first run. It was followed by another pair of runs towards the end of the inning that secured the 3-0 advantage for the Rainbow Wahine.
The Fighting Hawks threatened in the fifth and sixth inning, but they were unable to score until the seventh inning when
Chevelle Sartin secured an RBI to bring in pinch runner
Jagger Datan. They were unable to secure more runs as they fell to Hawai'i 3-1.
North Dakota returns to action tomorrow as the #1 seed and will face the #4 seed Montana at 4 PM CT. If they win, they will play the winner of the Hawai'i vs. Abilene Christian at 8 PM CT. If they lose, they will play the loser of the two at 6 PM CT.
