ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of North Dakota dropped both games against St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Hawks fell 6-2 in the first game and 7-0 in the second game.
Game 1: St. Thomas 6, North Dakota 2
Jannay Jones kicked things off for the Fighting Hawks on the mound. She put in 2.0 frames of work. She allowed six hits and four runs.
Jackie Albrecht stepped in for Jones and pitched 4.0 innings. She struck out five, and she allowed five hits and two runs.
North Dakota earned a hit early with a single from
Madi Moore, but they were unable to score. St. Thomas struck first on the scoreboard to take a two-run lead (2-0) at the bottom of the first.
The Fighting Hawks responded in the top of the second.
Mariah Peters was walked to place her on base for UND.
Izzy Haslett stepped up to the plate, but she grounded out as Peters advanced to second.
Angie Dumlao stepped up to bat and singled up the middle for an RBI as Peters scored to cut the deficit in half. The Tommies secured the final out of the inning to leave it 2-1 headed into the third.
Moore singled again in the top of the third.
Chevelle Sartin was walked to put the Fighting Hawks in scoring position, but North Dakota was unable to convert a run. St. Thomas extended their lead with two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1.
North Dakota struggled against the Tommies at the top of the fourth as they earned a 1-2-3 inning. UST scored two more in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-1 as the Fighting Hawks continued to battle.
Alyssa Rios singled to center field to start the top of the fifth. She advanced to second off a foul out by
Jocelyn Kirk. Moore singled once more to place her on the diamond with Rios. Sartin stepped up to the plate and reached on fielder's choice as Moore was clocked out. The Tommies attempted the double play but committed an error that allowed Rios to score and make it 6-2.
The teams battled, but neither team was able to score as St. Thomas won the first game 6-2.
Game 2: St. Thomas 7, North Dakota 0
Lauren Feld started in the circle for the Fighting Hawks. In her 4.2 frames of work, she allowed five hits and five runs while striking out three.
Morgan McConnell stepped in for Feld and llowed four hits and two runs in her 1.1 innings of work.'
Madi Moore once again provided the initial pop for the Fighting Hawks at the top of the first as she reached on an error by the short stop. She advanced to second on a wild pitch, but UND was unable to add another on the diamond to end the inning with her stranded. Feld and the Fighting Hawks earned a 1-2-3 inning to head into the second tied at zero.
Madison Pederson was walked at the top of the second to place her on early.
Mariah Peters stepped up and singled to right field to put UND in scoring position.
Liz Feld added a single to center field to load the bases with no outs. The Tommies secured the first out with a strike out by the pitcher.
Alyssa Rios stepped up and advanced on fielder's choice as the Tommies clocked Pederson out at home for the second out. UST secured the final out to keep it scoreless headed into the third.
In the top of the third, Moore once again reached on an error, but she was left stranded as the Tommies secured three consecutive outs. UST cracked the scoreboard with a home run in at the bottom of the third to make it 1-0.
North Dakota was unable to earn a spot on the diamond at the top of the fourth. St. Thomas added a run to make it 2-0 headed into the fifth inning.
Rios was walked to start the top of the fifth. Moore singled to third base to place herself on base with two outs, but UND left her stranded once more as UST secured the final out. St. Thomas added three runs at the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0.
Pederson reached on an error in the top of the sixth. Peters reached on a fielder's choice to help provide a pop, but the Tommies pitcher secured the final out. The Tommies added two runs to extend the lead to 7-0 headed into the seventh inning. North Dakota battled, but the Tommies won 7-0.
The Fighting Hawks will return to action tomorrow at 11 AM for the third game against the Tommies.
