Pentathletes Shine on Day One of UND Open

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – On the opening day of the UND Open, North Dakota claimed two event titles and posted seven new marks to the UND top-10 list. The most impressive event of the day was the pentathlon, where the Fighting Hawks claimed the top five spots and finished with four improvements to the all-time pentathlon list at UND.

Malene Kollberg won the pentathlon crown with 3,735 points. That point total now ranks No. 2 all-time at UND. She also recorded two more improvements to the UND top-10 list, making her mark at the meet instantly, running the fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles with a PR of 8.80, which tied her for the No. 4 spot on the UND top-10 list. Kollberg also moved into a tie for No. 9 all-time in the long jump with a leap of 18-2 1/2 (5.55m).

The Norwegian native also posted the best high jump (5-4 1/4, 1.63m) and 800-meter (2:24.94) marks of the day. Going into the 800 meters, Kollberg had already secured her spot on the UND top-10 list with 2,977 points, which would have been No. 10 in school history.

Tiffanie Magnusson was the runner-up in the pentathlon with 3,565 points. Her point total puts her at No. 4 in school history. Magnusson tied her PR in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.15 and had the top mark in the long jump with a leap of 18-10 (5.74m).

Brooklynn Gould took third in the pentathlon with 3,425 points. Gould's best event was the long jump, where she had a jump of 18-2 1/2 (5.55m), good to tie for No. 9 on the UND top-10 list.

Eucabeth Kivikangas put down 3,406 points to finish fourth in the pentathlon and is now No. 7 in the event in program history. Kivikangas won the shot put with a PR toss of 42-11 (13.08m), beating her previous best of 42-2 (12.85m). She also set a personal-best in the long jump with a mark of 17-6 (5.33m).

Elle Thorson was fifth in the pentathlon with a PR point total of 3,403 points. Thorson's point total improves her No. 8 mark on the UND top-10 list in the event. Thorson recorded a PR of 2:36.77 in the 800 meters.

Through four heptathlon events, Cruz Megazzini is the top heptathlete with 2,766 points. He paced all heptathletes in the first two events, winning the 60-meters in 7.19 seconds and taking the long jump with a leap of 21-4 3/4 (6.52m). He concluded the day with the second-best shot put throw of the group at 37-4 (11.38m) and posted a high jump PR of 6-1 1/4 (1.86m).

Ben Hidani heads into day two of the heptathlon in fourth place with 2,645 points. His top event was the long jump, where he put down the second-best leap of the day with a PR jump of 21-3 1/4 (6.48m). Hidani recorded PR's in three of the four events, also finishing with personal bests in the shot put (35-9 1/2, 10.91m) and high jump (5-10 3/4, 1.80m).

Garrett Syverson competed in the first three events and is in sixth place with 1,665 points. His best event was the shot put, where he had a toss of 34-10 1/2 (10.63m).

Kenna Curry won the women's discus title with a throw of 155-7 (47.43m). Natalie Mohring and Eve Goldstein were third (144-11, 44.17m) and fourth (141-10, 43.24m), respectively.

In the men's discus, Maguire Petersen was fourth with a mark of 132-9 (40.46m).

Day two of the UND Open will begin on Saturday with the final heptathlon events starting at 10 a.m. Field events will begin at 11 a.m. and events on the track will commence at 1 p.m. Live results will continue to be available at HerosTiming.com.
