VERMILLION, S.D. – Malene Kollberg (pentathlon) won a gold medal and North Dakota combined for a total of nine medals on the opening day of the Summit League Indoor Championships inside the DakotaDome on Saturday. The Fighting Hawk women scored 53 points and currently hold the top spot, while the UND men scored 12 points and are sitting fifth.
Kollberg won the gold medal and earned All-Summit League status in the pentathlon with a personal-best point total of 3,837 points. That total ranks No. 2 in school history. Going into the pentathlon 800 meters, Kollberg was 61 points behind
Tiffanie Magnusson but finished second in the pentathlon 800 meters with a time of 2:25.85, which moved her into the top spot at the end of the pentathlon.
The native from Drammen, Norway, set the pace early for UND with the third-fastest 60-meter time of the morning with a time of 8.83. She added to her point total in the following event, tying for the top pentathlon high jump mark with a clearance of 5-4 3/4 (1.64m). Kollberg's biggest improvement came in the shot put, where she recorded a PR of 33-11 1/4 (10.34m), beating her previous best of 33-3 1/4 (10.14m). Kollberg also tied the No. 2 long jump mark in school history with a personal-best leap of 19-3 1/4 (5.87m). At the time of the jump, that mark tied the school record.
Magnusson earned the silver medal and all-conference honors in the pentathlon with 3,814 points, which ranks No. 3 in program history. Magnusson built a massive lead early over the rest of the field, highlighted by her showing in the long jump, where she shattered the school record. Magnusson broke the long jump record with a personal-best leap of 19-7 1/2 (5.98m), beating the record of Kollberg and
Elise Ulseth, who shared it at 19-3 1/4 (5.87m). Magnusson also recorded personal-bests in the high jump (5-3 1/4, 1.61m) and shot put (39-5 1/4, 12.02m). Her PR in the high jump was the second-best mark of the pentathlon.
Later in the meet, Magnusson and Kollberg took part in the long jump and combined to add 10 more points to UND's total. Magnusson finished with the bronze medal and All-Summit League accolades with a leap of 19-1 1/4 (5.82m). Kollberg took fifth in the event and added four points with a jump of 18-9 3/4 (5.73m).
Luke Labatte came away with the silver medal in the 3,000 meters and was the runner-up in 8:12.47. His finish gave him All-Summit League status and made him the top point scorer of the day for the North Dakota men with eight points.
Natalie Mohring picked up All-Summit League accolades for the second straight year in the weight throw. She won the bronze medal on her fifth throw with a PR toss of 64-10 (19.76m). That mark now sits No. 3 in the event all-time at UND.
Kenna Curry and
Allison Lardy joined Mohring in the weight throw and also placed. Curry was fifth with a throw of 63-8 3/4 (19.42m), while Lardy took seventh with a distance of 60-3 (18.36m).
In the final event of the day, the women's distance medley relay team of
Eliana Malnourie,
Maggie Dervis,
Brenna Barnick and
Conny Wohlfahrt all also garnered All-Summit League status.
The DMR team won the bronze medal with a time of 12:04.89; a time which is now No. 6 in program history.
Jake Hall,
Josh Beck,
Aleksa Milanovic and
Alec Nelson were the final Hawks to compete on the track for the UND men and they put together the fourth-fastest distance medley relay time in school history. The DMR squad ran a time 10:17.89 to place fifth.
Back in the pentathlon,
Elle Thorson finished fifth with a personal-best point total of 3,557. That point total moved her up to No. 5 in school history in the event. Thorson's best event was the high jump, where she tied for the top mark with a PR height of 5-4 3/4 (1.64m). She also recorded personal-bests in the long jump (18-0 1/2, 5.50m) and 800 meters (2:34.35).
Eucabeth Kivikangas was next in the pentathlon, taking sixth with a PR point total of 3,551, good for No. 6 in program history. Kivikangas put down the top pentathlon shot put mark of the day with a personal-best mark of 44-2 (13.46m). She also recorded PR's in the 60-meter hurdles (9.49) and 800 meters (2:33.95).
Brooklynn Gould was also in the pentathlon and just missed out on scoring points, finishing ninth with 3,437 points. Gould had PR's in the 60-meter hurdles (9.21) and shot put (35-9 1/2, 10.91m). She crossed the finish line third in the pentathlon 800 meters in a time of 2:28.11.
In qualifying on the track Saturday afternoon,
Jesse Middendorf finished second in his heat of the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.57 to automatically qualify for the finals on Sunday.
Jerzie Finstad also advanced to the finals of the 400 meters with a PR time of 56.58 in prelims, moving her up to No. 5 in school history.
Hinewai Knowles earned the final spot of qualifying in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, running a PR of 8.75 to move her up to No. 4 in program history.
Through the first four events of the heptathlon,
Maguire Petersen paces UND and sits third with 2,963 points. Petersen had the top heptathlon shot put mark of the day with a throw of 43-4 1/2 (13.22m). He also won the heptathlon high jump and tied the No. 5 mark in school history with a clearance of 6-8 (2.03m).
Trenton Hanseder is currently ninth in the heptathlon with 2,608 points. He had the second-best long jump mark in the heptathlon of the day with a personal-best jump of 22-1 (6.73m). He also put down a PR throw of 38-2 1/4 (11.64m) in the shot put.
Ben Hidani is right behind Hanseder and is 10th in the heptathlon with 2,554 points. Hidani's best event was the shot put where he finished with a personal-best mark of 37-1 1/4 (11.31m), beating his pervious best of 35-9 1/2 (10.91m).
Aric David is the final Hawk in the heptathlon and sits 12th with 2,486 points. He posted personal-bests in the 60 meters (7.55) and high jump (6-2, 1.88m).
North Dakota will continue competition at the Summit League Indoor Championships on Sunday. The heptathlon will resume at 9:30 a.m., followed by field events commencing at 11:30 a.m. and the final events on the track starting at 1 p.m. Live results will continue to be available at
