North Dakota falls just short in tough battle with Creighton

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team dropped a tightly-contested 4-3 battle to Creighton on Friday afternoon from the Hanscom Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb.

UND (2-7) battled for every point against a tough BIG EAST foe, seeing the match come down to a tiebreaker in singles action to give Creighton (4-2) the 4-3 victory.

The Fighting Hawks got off to a strong start once again, earning another doubles point with victories on the No. 1 and 3 courts. Aziza Aubin and Lucia Rizza started it off with a 6-2 triumph at the bottom spot before the top duo of Sapir Sela and Andrea Jansson notched a 6-3 win to secure the 1-0 lead for the visitors. The middle pairing of Jule Schulte and Nore Heinitz nearly made it a perfect sweep in two-person play, holding a 5-4 advantage when play was halted.

Creighton answered back with a pair of wins on the No. 3 and 5 courts to take a 2-1 lead, but NoDak quickly brought the score even at 2-2 with a 6-2, 7-5 victory from Jansson at the second position.

After a win on the No. 1 court by the Jays to bring the match to a clinching position, Aubin pushed the contest to its brink by rallying from a 6-3 defeat in the first set with a 6-1 triumph in the middle frame and a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker after trailing 5-2 to level the score at 3-3 at the bottom spot.

It was another three set affair at the No. 4 position, but it was Creighton who came out victorious to give the hosts the 4-3 match victory.

North Dakota returns to action on Sunday morning at Northern Iowa beginning at 10 a.m.
