Box Score CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team bounced back with a big 6-1 victory over Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon from Cedar Falls, Iowa.
"Today's match wrapped up a very solid weekend of tennis on the road for our team," said UND head coach Tom Boysen. "We battled and completed extremely well against a good Creighton team on Friday and literally came up just a few points short. We talk a lot about responses. How will we respond to adversity, to succeed, to nerves, to our doubts. I thought we responded really well to Friday's result. We came out strong in doubles today against Northern Iowa on all three courts and set a good tone for the match."
Sapir Sela reached a major career milestone in the win, becoming only the third player in program history to earn 100 victories in her career. The Boca Raton, Fla., native joins Preethi Kasilingham (2016-19) and current teammate
Andrea Jansson as the only players to cross the 100-win plateau at North Dakota.
Sela joined the 100-win club early in the match, teaming up with Jansson on the No. 1 court in doubles play and notching a 6-1 victory before
Jule Schulte and
Nore Heinitz followed with a 6-1 score of their own at the middle spot to secure the 1-0 lead for the visitors.
Aziza Aubin and
Lucia Rizza polished off a perfect start to the match with a 6-2 win on the No. 3 court to send the Fighting Hawks into singles action with all the momentum.
It was Northern Iowa though who took the first point in singles action with a victory at the No. 2 position, but NoDak answered back by ripping off five straight wins to claim the 6-1 overall match victory.
"Northern Iowa pushed us in singles and had us on the ropes for a bit today," said Boysen. "I thought we once again really responded well as a team to get the 6-1 victory."
Heinitz quickly gave UND the lead right back with a 6-3, 6-2 win on the No. 4 court before Schulte rallied back from a 6-4 loss in the opening set to record a three-set victory with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at the third spot to push the match to its brink.
In fitting fashion, it was Sela who earned win No. 101 and the clincher with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win at the top spot to seal the match victory for the Fighting Hawks.
"Huge 'congratulations' to Sapir for notching her 100th (and 101st) career victories today and for getting the clinch," said Boysen. "It's a pretty exclusive club with only three members - Preethi Kasilingam,
Andrea Jansson and now Sapir, so a great accomplishment for her."
Rizza extended the lead to 5-1 on the bottom court with a 6-1, 7-6 triumph while Aubin polished off the 6-1 win with a three-set rally (1-6, 6-3, 10-4) at the No. 5 spot to finish off the day.
North Dakota returns home for a pair of matches next weekend beginning with a Friday showdown with Marquette at 1 p.m. from Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks.
