INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Kenna Curry from the North Dakota track and field team earned a bid to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw, the NCAA announced late Tuesday night. The women's weight throw will take place on Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m. (CT) at the Track at New Balance in Boston.
By qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships, Curry became just the third North Dakota student-athlete to qualify for the meet in UND's Division I history. She joins Molli Detloff and Kyley Foster, who both qualified for the national meet in 2019. Detloff finished 11th in the weight throw with a toss of 67-9 1/2 (20.66m) and Foster was 10th in the pole vault with a height of 13-7 3/4 (4.16m) at that meet.
Curry's throw of 71-6 1/4 (21.80m) at the SDSU Indoor Classic earlier this season qualified her for the National Championship meet. In Brookings, Curry's throw won the invitational weight throw title and moved her up to No. 2 in school history.
The Elk Point, S.D., native qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships by having one of the top 16 marks overall in the nation at the end of the regular season. Curry has the No. 15 throw nationally heading into the championships and is seeded No. 14.
Last week, Curry shined at the Summit League Indoor Championships and was a two-time All-Summit League performer. She won the gold medal in the weight throw with a toss of 69-2 (21.08m) for her first Summit League indoor title of her career on day one of the meet. She returned to the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility for day two and gained a silver medal in the shot put with a mark of 50-6 (15.39m). Her shot put throw tied her PR mark, which set the school record at the UND Open earlier this season. At the conclusion of the conference championships, Curry earned the title of Field Championship MVP and was responsible for 18 of UND's 120 points scored at the meet.
