GRAND FORKS, N.D. - No. 13/12 North Dakota will host No. RV/20 Youngstown State inside the Alerus Center this Saturday. Kickoff between the Fighting Hawks and Penguins is slated for 3 p.m. The game will be televised on Midco Sports Two. It will also be carried on the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
North Dakota is 3-2 and 1-0 in MVFC play after running past Northern Iowa, 35-7, at the UNI-Dome last week. The win marked the 100th victory in UND's Division I history. NoDak's defense was huge in the win, with the opening points of the game coming on a Kaden Vig 63-yard touchdown return after his strip-sack late in the first quarter. UND's defense did not allow UNI to score until the final 46 seconds and only allowed the Panthers in the red-zone once. Jerry Kaminski was outstanding in the game, going 20-for-23 passing for 246 yards and four scores. He had completions to 10 receivers (including himself) and tossed touchdown passes to four different players. B.J. Fleming was the most productive receiver with five grabs for 134 yards and a score, highlighted by a 77-yard touchdown grab in the third quarter.
Youngstown State enters the game at 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play after falling to No. 2 South Dakota State, 35-30, at Stambaugh Stadium last Saturday. The Penguins led by as many as 14 points and owned a 17-7 lead at halftime, but the Jackrabbits scored three third quarter touchdowns to erase the deficit and escape the Ice Castle. Beau Brungard rushed for 130 yards and passed for 275 through the air while throwing a career-high three touchdown passes.
UND holds a 4-1 lead in the all-time series and is 2-0 in the series in games played in Grand Forks. Last season, the Penguins stunned the Hawks, 41-40 in overtime at Youngstown. As MVFC opponents, NoDak holds a 2-1 series edge. All games in the series this century have been decided by less than a touchdown. When adding up the margin of victory for the winning team in the series as MVFC opponents, the winning margin averages to a single field goal (3.0 points).
