GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The final day of 2025 saw one tournament come to an end while another close out the group stage on Wednesday from Davos, Switzerland and the Twin Cities.
The group stage came to an end at the 2026 IIHF World Juniors, as Canada closed out a perfect 3-0-0 record with a win over Finland to claim the top spot in Group B while the United States dropped its finale to Sweden to finish second in Group A.
SPENGLER CUP: HC Davos 6, U.S. Collegiate Selects 3
The dream run finished just short, as the U.S. Collegiate Selects fell in the final of the 97th Spengler Cup to host-HC Davos, 6-3.
It was a back-and-forth affair that saw the contest level at 3-3 late in the third period, but HC Davos struck for a trio of goals over the final five minutes of action to capture its record 17th title in the event.
Defensemen
Jake Livanavage and
Abram Wiebe both saw plenty of action in the final, with Livanavage finishing second on the team with 17:09 of ice time and Wiebe logging 16:37.
The duo finished with one assist and held an even rating through the four games of the tournament. They become the first active UND players to medal at the event.
WORLD JUNIORS: Sweden 6, United States 3
Team USA suffered its first setback at the World Juniors on Wednesday evening, dropping a 6-3 contest to Sweden in the final group stage contest from Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul.
Forward
Will Zellers continued his torrid offensive play, as he struck for his fifth goal in just four games in the second period to try and mount a comeback for the Americans. Zellers was named Team USA's Player of the Game and was awarded the honor by former UND standout T.J. Oshie.
The Maple Grove, Minn., native finished group play second among all skaters at the tournament with seven points while his five goals are tied for first.
Defenseman
EJ Emery logged just under 13 minutes of action in his third game of the tournament while goaltender Caleb Heil did not see any action.
Team USA will take on Finland in the quarterfinal round on Friday, Jan. 2 at 5:00 p.m. on NHL Network and TSN.
WORLD JUNIORS: Canada 7, Finland 4
Team Canada made it a perfect 3-0-0 in group action in the last group stage game of the tournament on Wednesday night, notching a 7-4 win over Finland from 3M Arena in Minneapolis.
For the first time all tournament, all three UND representatives on Canada were held without a point, as forward
Cole Reschny as well as defensemen Ethan MacKenzie and
Keaton Verhoeff all went scoreless.
Canada, the winners of Group B, will take on Slovakia in the quarterfinals on Friday, Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. on NHL Network and TSN.
