GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? UND goalie Philippe Lamoureux (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.) stopped 29 shots on Friday to lead the Fighting Sioux men's hockey team to a 6-1 win over Quinnipiac in the season opener for both teams. UND freshman Darcy Zajac (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored two goals in his collegiate debut.

Also scoring for the first time in their careers were sophomore forwards Ryan Martens (Selkirk, Manitoba) and Brad Miller (Alpharetta, Ga.). Miller had a goal and two assists, while Martens had a goal and one assist.

The Sioux (1-0-0 overall) outshot the Bobcats (0-1-0), 38-30.

UND's Matt Watkins (So., Aylesbury, Sask.) opened the scoring with a wrister from in close at 17:28 of the first period.

The Sioux upped their lead to 2-0 just 28 seconds into the second period when T.J. Oshie (So., Warroad, Minn.) deflected in a Jonathan Toews (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba) shot with UND on the power play.

Martens made it 3-0 when he beat Quinnipiac goalie Bud Fisher up high over the right shoulder at 2:26 of the second period. Martens' goal came on a pass from Erik Fabian (Sr., Roseau, Minn.) from behind the Quinnipiac net and gave UND a 3-0 lead.

The Sioux scored their fourth goal at 5:03 of the third on a goal by Miller that almost did not count. After taking a pass from Fabian Miller fired a high shot that hit off the inside bar in the back of the goal and came out. Play did not immediately stop, but after the next whistle, officials ruled that the puck had gone in the net after reviewing replays.

Just over two minutes later, Zajac got UND's fifth goal when he tipped in a shot by Andrew Kozek (So., Sicamous, B.C.) while the Sioux were on the power play.

Quinipiac got on the board at 11:01 of the third when David Marshall scored on the power play on a give-and-go pass from Dan Travis.

Zajac finished out the scoring with his second goal of the game at 16:43 of the third.

The teams will conclude their series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
