GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- In 77 career games, University of North Dakota junior defenseman Robbie Bina (Grand Forks) has a total of two goals.

He certainly picked a great time to double that total tonight, although they won't count.

Bina's second goal of the game at 2:36 of overtime gave the Fighting Sioux a 5-4 exhibition victory over the U.S. National Under-18 Team in front of an announced attendance of 10,013 at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Bina jumped into the play on the tail end of a 3-on-2 rush headed by Sioux sophomore wing Ryan Duncan (Calgary, Alberta). The puck came back off the stick of sophomore center Jonathan Toews (Winnipeg, Manitoba) to Bina, who was headed to the net.

Bina went high with his wrist shot over the glove of Under-18 goalie Josh Unice to end an entertaining game.

Since the contest is officially classified as an exhibition, neither the victory nor any of the statistics will count on UND's records.

"I guess I've got to pick my spots better,'' quipped Bina, when he was reminded that his two goals won't officially count.

The Under-18 team, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., dropped to 6-5-2 against NCAA teams, including overtime losses to the likes of UND, Michigan and Boston College. It is a talented collection of players from all over the United States, with 16 of them already accepting college hockey scholarships.

The Under-18 team rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the third period with a power play by Mike Hoeffel at 10:43 and a blast from the point by Kevin Shattenkirk at 16:37.

But Bina rode to the rescue in overtime to save the Sioux.

In a game lacking the intensity of UND's regular fare of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, physical play was at a minimum.

"I think we can take some positives out of it,'' UND coach Dave Hakstol said. "They are a skilled team that I thought played very well. We didn't play at a high intensity level, but at the end of the night, we can take some positives away from it.''

The Sioux had some positively spectacular plays from some of their marquee skaters.

Sophomore right wing T.J. Oshie (Warroad, Minn.) showed he can stickhandled his way through a crowded phone booth by slipping and sliding through traffic to score on a 4-on-4 situation to stake the Sioux to a 4-2 lead at 6:06 of the third period.

Three minutes earlier, Toews, a first-round NHL draft pick like Oshie, walked around U.S. defenseman A.J. Sturges with a great move, then threaded a goal-mouth pass to sophomore wing Brad Miller (Alpharetta, Ga.) for a tap-in from the side of the crease.

Toews assisted on three goals to join Bina with a three-point game to lead the Sioux scoring.

The Sioux, who didn't take their first lead until Miller's goal early in the third period, trailed 1-0 when Sioux captain Chris Porter (Sr., Thunder Bay, Ont.) blasted a power-play goal by Unice at 14:39 of the opening period with just two seconds left on the power play.

Bina's first goal came at 9:20 of the second period and tied the game at 2-2, his wrister from the right point coming on a Sioux power play.

But the U.S. team came back with two goals in the second half of the third period to force overtime.

Hakstol has seen Bina make plays like his overtime winner before, so it didn't surprise him.

"When the play developed, Robbie came from below the (faceoff) dots in our own zone and followed the play up,'' Hakstol said. "That's the second goal he's scored from there. Maybe we're seeing a trend with him. It was a good play to end a good hockey game.''

The Sioux outshot the Under-18 team 38-29 and converted on 2 of 5 chances on the power play compared to 1 of 8 for their opponents. Junior Philippe Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) finished with 25 saves for the Sioux to 33 for Unice of the Under-18 team.

The plays by Oshie and Toews in particular were mentioned by Hakstol.

"I thought they were big-time plays by the two guys that we need to make big-time plays for us,'' Hakstol said. "They both did that. That's a great sign for this team.''

Bina's play was noteworthy as well. "If we can get a goal by me jumping up (into the play), that's the way we've got to do it,'' Bina said.

Toews said the lower intensity level from playing an exhibition game during the regular season was evident.

"Maybe tonight we didn't have enough respect for our opponent,'' Toews said. "They're a good team. The fact that we squeezed this one out at the end, the fact that we found a way to win, hopefully we can use that down the road.''

The Sioux return to WCHA play next weekend when Wisconsin comes to Grand Forks for a Friday-Saturday series.
