GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux baseball team swept Bemidji State in a doubleheader by scores of 7-6 and 7-2. With the doubleheader sweep, North Dakota sweeps the season series against Bemidji State. North Dakota improves to 14-13 on the season and Bemidji State falls to 6-35.
Game 1 - North Dakota - 7 Bemidji State - 6
North Dakota used late-inning heroics to defeat Bemidji State. Junior Chris Gulsvig lead off the inning with a single to right-centerfield. Ryne Jungling then put down the sacrifice bunt that advanced Gulsvig to second base. UND Head Coach Kelvin Ziegler put senior Tyler Frenzel in to pinch run for Gulsvig. Two pitches later, senior Tim Burns laced a double to left-center to score Frenzel for the game-winning run.
Junior Sean Cooley earned the win after pitching one inning of relief work for the Sioux. Sophomore Cody Randt got the start and went four innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Randt struck out four and walked two in the no-decision.
Freshman Jameson Benson pitched two innings of relief, allowing four hits and two earned runs.
Junior Chris Gulsvig went 3-3 with a double at the plate in the game to lead the Sioux. Senior Mike Lundeen was 2-3 with three RBIs and a double. Tim Burns went 2-3 and drove in the game-winning run for UND.
Game 2 - North Dakota - 7 Bemidji State - 2
Senior Jason Fuller got his first start of the season on the mound and got his first win of the season in the same outing. Fuller went 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and striking out three and walking none. Freshman Jameson Benson pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing three hits and one earned run.
UND never trailed in the game as the offense scored a run in the first inning, two in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the fifth.
In the first inning, freshman Andrew Gudmunson hit a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Frenzel from third. Gudmunson would come through in the third inning as he singled down the left field line to drive in Anthony Brenner and Nate Meissner.
In the fourth, Scott Schmidt singled home Tyler Frenzel and Mike Lundeen. Nate Meissner would hit a double to drive in Schmidt for UND's third run of the inning.
UND's final run came in the fifth inning off a Bo Stanley single. Stanley's single drove in Chris Gulsvig to put the Sioux up 7-0 at that point.
Bemidji State would add a run in the sixth and seventh innings, but fell short in the 7-2 loss.
Scott Schmidt and Nate Meissner each had two hits in the game. Schmidt drove in two runs and Meissner drove in one. Andrew Gudmunson was 1-2 with three RBIs.
North Dakota retuns to action on Saturday at home against NCC rival, Nebraska-Omaha. Saturday's games are set to start at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. On Sunday, the Sioux and Mavericks will face off again for another doubleheader. The game times on Sunday are set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
