GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux volleyball team defeated Chadron State, 3-1. UND won the first two games 30-20 and 30-15, but Chadron State won game three 30-26. UND answered back by winning game four 30-20. With the victory, UND improves to 2-6 on the season. Chadron State falls to 3-6 on the season.
The Sioux offense was firing on all cylinders against Chadron State as setter Laura Stirling (Jr., Fargo, N.D.) paced the team with 51 set assists. Three Sioux hitters finished with 10 or more kills. Tara Holmen (Sr., Berthold, N.D.) led the way with 20 kills and fellow senior Mary Blume (Herman, Minn.) added 14 in the contest. Sophomore Amanda Polzin (Hutchinson, Minn.) tallied 11 for the Sioux.
Defensively, sophomore Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) had a career night. Langseth tallied 25 digs for a new career high. Freshman Courtney Halvorson (Oklee, Minn.) also had a career night as she tallied 16 digs. Freshman Briena Hawkins (Andover, Minn.) added seven digs and sophomore Kristin Hoy (West Fargo, N.D.) added eight for UND.
UND went 2-2 in its home tournament. They defeated Minnesota State - Moorhead and Chadron State, but suffered losses to Northern State and Northern Michigan.
North Dakota will return to action next Friday as they travel to the Minnesota Duluth Classic. North Dakota will play two games on Friday, one against Ferris State and the other against West Texas A & M and the game times are set for 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
