Head volleyball coach Katy Peterson resigns, assistant coach Kari Peterson appointed interim head coach

GRAND FORKS, N.D.--University of North Dakota director of athletics Brian Faison announced today that head volleyball coach Katy Peterson has resigned in order to pursue other career opportunities.

Faison also announced that assistant coach Kari Peterson has been named interim head coach for the 2008 season. A national search for a permanent replacement will be conducted following the season, according to Faison.

In two seasons as head coach at UND, Katy Peterson amassed a 21-34 (.382) overall record and a 6-18 (.333) North Central conference record.

Kari Peterson has previous head coaching experience at Valley City State (N.D.), where she led the Vikings to a 10-15 overall record in 2005 prior to coming to UND. Peterson has also enjoyed stints as an assistant coach at North Alabama (2004), Texas A&M-Kingsville (2003) and Minnesota State-Moorhead (2002). While at North Alabama, Peterson helped guide the Lions to a 24-7 record, a Gulf South Conference championship and an NCAA Division II postseason appearance.

Peterson played collegiately at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., from 1997 to 2001 and was named the Division II National Player of the Year in 2000 after leading the Vikings to a national runner-up finish.

The Fighting Sioux open the 2008 season Aug. 29-30 at the Otter Classic, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay. UND will face Humboldt State and host CSUMB on the 29th and Western Oregon and Merrimack on the 30th.
