GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? The University of North Dakota volleyball team will kickoff its 2008 home schedule this Tuesday evening against Bemidji State. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
In October of last year, the Sioux (4-0) came away with a 3-1 (30-24, 30-19, 30-27, 32-30) victory and logged its fifth-straight victory over the Beavers (3-1) since 2005. The win also snapped a UND five-game losing streak. Tara Holmen (Berthold, Minn.) led the offensive with a team-high 14 kills. Britta Hanson (Thompson, N.D.) and Amanda Polzin (Hutchinson, Minn.) finished with 11 kills apiece. Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) tabbed her fifth double-double of the season recording 43 assists and 11 digs.
Tuesday's match-up marks the 49th meeting between the two teams since 1976 with UND leading the series 30-18. On Oct. 1 of that year, the Beavers defeated the Fighting Sioux, 2-1.
This past weekend at the 2008 California State Monterey Bay Otter Classic, the Sioux were the only team to remain unbeaten. On day one, UND defeated Humboldt State, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) and the host team, 3-1 (25-12, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20). On day two, UND took a 3-1 (29-27, 15-25, 26-24, 25-22) victory over Western Oregon and then capped the weekend with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-15) win over Merrimack.
Hanson led the squad with a 42.0 (47-for-88) attack percentage and 13 blocks. Redshirt freshman Devin Trefz (Bagley, Minn.) tallied 44 kills, eight service aces, 25 digs, and six blocks. Junior Lindsay Vortherms (Windom, Minn.) logged 35 digs (4.64 d/g) with four aces and junior Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) recorded 158 assists two aces, 35 digs, and three blocks.
The Sioux are back on the road this weekend as they travel to Laredo, Texas for the Texas A&M International Border Olympics. The green and white are scheduled to play Tarleton, Friday morning at 11 a.m. and the host team at 5 p.m. that evening. UND will finish off the tournament on Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. match against Texas-Brownsville.
