VB Game Notes: Sioux look to go for a school-record 9-0 start

Pure Perfection: With an 8-0 record, Kari Peterson is now the first coach in UND volleyball history to win eight-straight during their debut year. She was the second coach to open 5-0 with Maria Brueggman setting the mark first in 2002. The team went on to finish 24-11, 8-8 NCC with a trip to the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in Greeley, Colo.

With a win on Wednesday, the Sioux will be the first team in UND history to open a season with a perfect 9-0 record.

 

What's on tap: Once again, the University of North Dakota volleyball team will have a week full of action. The Fighting Sioux will host back-to-back opponents with Mayville State on Wednesday and Minnesota, Crookston on Thursday. On Saturday, UND will travel to St. Peter, Minn. to take on both Gustavus Adolphus and Carleton.

Noting the Sioux: Last week, the Sioux easily bypassed their opponents to tally a perfect 4-0 record. UND won all but two sets as they defeated Bemidji State (3-1), Tarleton State (3-1), Texas A&M International (3-0), and UT-Brownsville (3-0).

Outside hitter Devin Trefz (Rfr., Bagley, Minn.) was 39-for-90 (.322 pct.) with four aces, 17 digs, eight blocks (two solo), and 48.0 points. Middle hitter Britta Hanson (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) was 51-for-123 (.260 pct.) with 11 digs, 11 blocks (one solo), and 57.0 points. Outside hitter Annika Smed (Fr., Albert Lea, Minn.) attacked for 22.4 percent (34-for-98) with a team-high eight aces, 45 digs, and nine block assists. Setter Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) racked up a team-high 147 assists.

 

Looking great in ?08: For the first time since 2002, the Sioux have started off the season with an undefeated 8-0 record. With the eight-straight victories, interim head coach Kari Peterson is the first coach in history to open their debut season with such a perfect record. She is also the third coach to ever coach a team to an eight-match win streak.

Bruggeman took the Sioux to 8-0 in 2002. After a loss in match No. 9, the Sioux streaked again, going nine-straight before another loss.

 

Notes on Mayville State: Mayville State is on a six-match win streak after gong 4-0 at the Sioux Falls Tournament. MSU defeated Sioux Falls (3-2), Valley City State (3-1), Waldorf College (3-0), and Dana College (3-1). The Comets are led by Ashley Nelson and Jenny Chamberlain. Nelson leads the team with 60 kills. She has also tabbed six aces, a team-high 84 digs, and 10 blocks (one solo). Chamberlain has recorded 58 kills, a team-high 13 aces, 67 digs, and 12 blocks (four solo). Alyssa Clancy and Brianne Gebeke have both recorded a team-high 20 blocks.

As a team, the Comets have totalled 6251 kills (10.91/set), 34 aces, 409 digs, 46 blocks, and are attacking at 17.0 percent.

North Dakota leads the series, 12-6. In their last meeting on August 17, 2002, the Golden  Eagles fell to the Sioux, 3-1.

 

Notes on Minnesota, Crookston: Crookston will look to notch its first win of the season after dropping seven straight. Last week at the Golden Eagle Invitational, UMC fell to Lake Superior State (0-3), the University of Manitoba (1-3), and South Dakota (0-3). Leading Crookston is Amber Meyer with 63 kills (2.62/set) and 11 blocks (two solo), Andrea Hubbell with 15 total blocks (two solo), and Jaclyn Slepicks with four aces and 82 digs.

As a team, the Golden Eagles have totalled 252 kills (10.50/set), 27 aces, 308 digs, 32 blocks, and are attacking at 15.0 percent.

North Dakota leads the series, 14-3. In their last meeting on October 23, 2007, UMC defeated the Sioux, 3-2.

 

Notes on Carleton: At the Emory Classic in Atlanta, Ga., Carleton dropped three out of four matches. The Knights fell to Haverford (2-3) and Southwestern (0-3) before overcoming Clark Atlanta, 3-0. Carleton closed out the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Emory. Leading the team this year is Annie Eckhoff with 26 kills (2.89/set) and eight blocks. Beth Jarrett has a team-high 54 assists, Kelly Lovett leads with six aces, and Laura Barsness has tallied 30 digs.

As a team, the Knights have totalled 93 kills (10.33/set), 25 aces, 101 digs, 17 blocks, and are attacking at 10.33 percent.

This is he first meeting between North Dakota and Carleton.

 

Notes on Gustavus Adolphus: Gustavus Adolphus is rolling through the season with a perfect 8-0 record. This is the program's best start since 1984 when they began the season 20-0. This past week, the Gusties hosted the 2008 Gustavus Classic where they defeated Martin Luther College (3-0), UW-LaCrosse (3-1), College of St. Scholatica (3-1), and Viterbo University (3-1).  Gustavus is led by Megan Gehring and Emily Klein. Gehring has recorded a team-high 85 kills and 35 blocks (nine solo). She has also posted 14 digs, and four aces. Klein leads the squad with 22 aces and 183 digs.

As a team, the Gusties have totalled 356 kills (12.28/set), 51 aces, 565 digs, 67.5 blocks, and are attacking at 18.8 percent.

 

pointer sister, hanson moving up in the books: With a tally of 769.5 points over three years, junior Britta Hanson has moved into the No. 8 spot in all-time career points scored-rally. She needs just 11 more to tie Kristi Glass man (2001-03) at 780.5 points.
