WATERLOO, Iowa--The University of North Dakota tennis team opened the 2009 campaign today against Northern Iowa, suffering a 9-0 setback at the hands of the host Panthers at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.

In doubles play, UND's No. 1 duo of Emily Callison (Sr., Mesa, Ariz.) and Brynne Wischer (Jr., Grand Forks) was downed 8-4 by UNI's Sampada Kanade and Diana Mendez.

The Panthers' Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Phoebe Walker combined to defeat Katie Callison (Jr., Mesa, Ariz.) and Katie Wessman (Sr., Fargo, N.D.) 8-1 in No. 2 doubles and Taynara Moraes and Jessica Kunzelmann downed Tiffany Reisenauer (Fr., Dickinson, N.D.) and Molly Maurer (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) to complete the doubles sweep.

Northern Iowa proved equally strong in singles competition.

Gonzalez-Garrido defeated Emily Callison 6-3, 6-1 in No. 1 singles, while Katie Callison suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Kanade in No. 2 singles.

In the No. 3 slot, Wischer was downed 6-1, 6-0 by Walker. Wessman was blanked 6-0, 6-0 bu Kunzelmann in the No. 4 spot while Maurer was defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Moraes in No. 5 play.

Mendez completed the Panthers' sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Reisenauer.

UND will return to action Feb. 13-15 at the Gustavus Adolphus Invite in St. Peter, Minn.
