UND signs women?s basketball coach Gene Roebuck to contract extension

GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? University of North Dakota Athletic Director Brian Faison announced today that Fighting Sioux head women's basketball coach Gene Roebuck has signed a contract extension that will take him through June 30, 2012.

“We feel so fortunate to have Coach Roebuck at the University of North Dakota and I know that our women's basketball program will be successful at the Division I level because of Gene,” said Faison. “His drive and determination are what makes Fighting Sioux women's basketball one of the great programs in the country.

“His student-athletes are proven winners on the court, in the classroom and in the community.  He has also built a tremendous fan base for women's basketball here in the state of North Dakota.”

In his 22 years as the Fighting Sioux head coach, Roebuck has led UND to 11 North Central Conference titles, nine NCC playoff titles, 22 NCAA Division II playoff appearances, five Elite Eight appearances, one national runner up finish and three NCAA Division II national titles.

“I'm really happy this has occurred,” said Roebuck. “I definitely want to see us through this transition and make the change towards becoming a strong competitor at the Division I level.

“I've been at UND a long time and have a lot of pride in what our program has accomplished over the years.”

Roebuck entered the season, his 22nd at UND, with a 557-93 (.857) record at UND, including a 27-4 record last season.  After a 95-67 victory over Houston Baptist on Saturday, the Fighting Sioux improved to 13-11 and remained undefeated at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in their first year of transition to Division I status.

A 10-time North Central Conference Coach of the Year, Roebuck finished last season as the winningest active coach in DII women's basketball. He has coached 19 All-Americans and produced four WBCA National Players of the Year, eight NCC MVPs and has had 52 players earn All-NCC honors.
