The 2009 North Dakota softball team at Disneyland. |

Everybody loves Spring Break. It is the perfect reason to get away from the frozen tundra we call home and branch out to the other, warmer states. This year for our week off, the softball team is playing a series of games in Southern California. Although the state is known for its terrible traffic, thick smog, and rude people, when buying a ticket to California, you know that you can always count on ideal softball weather.
If you think about it, when you can play outside without multiple layers of clothing or hand warmers ... the smog, people, and traffic seem rather unimportant.
I have seen some pretty amazing views before, but I can think of no better view than looking out from the field at Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego. The ocean lies directly outside the fence. If you ever find yourself swimming and you run into a softball floating along the surface, it most likely came from this exact location.
Throughout the day the field is used as an easy access point to the beach. There must have been at least 10 surfers that, throughout our hour and a half of warm ups, walked with their gigantic boards along the outside of the fence to reach the beach.
Today, we had the day off and decided to visit Disneyland. A place that, under any normal circumstances, would be seen as “the happiest place on earth”. However, I quickly realized that the level of “happiness” can be easily swayed based on where a person parks. Apparently, if you park on the right side of certain cone you should prepare yourself for severe scolding by old men wearing Mickey Mouse ears. And, if you try to come back at him saying something like,
“But I thought that this was supposed to be the happiest place on earth?”
He will simply rebut by saying,
“It is a happy place!”
He will then make you reload your van, drive five feet to the other side of the cones, and continue from there.
And while the old man with the ears was mildly entertaining, I truly believe that the highlight of the trip was watching Casie Hanson put Mr. Incredible's muscles to shame.
Thank you for reading and be sure to check in again next Tuesday.
