MACOMB, Ill.--The Fighting Sioux tennis team concluded the 2009 season today, suffering a 5-2 loss to Chicago State this morning and a 6-1 loss to host Western Illinois at Brophy Hall.
In this morning's opener against Chicago State, UND received a stirring singles win from senior Katie Wessman in No. 5 singles. Wessman, a Fargo, N.D., native, dropped the first set, 6-2, to Katie Moore, but stormed back with consecutive 7-6 wins in the final two sets.
The Cougars won the five other singles matches that were played as well as the two doubles matches that were played. CSU did not field competitors in No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, forfeiting victories in those two events.
Wessman provided the Sioux with another win in the afternoon loss to Western Illinois, as she defeated Courtney Brooks, 6-1 and 6-3, in No. 6 singles. It was UND's lone singles victory against the Westerwinds.
In doubles action, juniors Katie Callison (Mesa, Ariz.) and Molly Maurer (Hutchinson, Minn.) teamed for a No. 2 doubles victory over Yana Meinert and Stephanie Baumer. The Callison and Maurer duo won 8-3.
UND finished its first season of Division I competition with a 10-10 record.
Notes: Seniors Wessman and Emily Callison (Mesa, Ariz.) played in their final collegiate matches today. Wessman finished the season with a team-best 12-7 record in singles play, including an 11-5 mark in No. 5 singles. Callison, who competed as UND's No. 1 singles for much of the year, finished 8-12.
