Sioux soccer tie with Minnesota State, Moorhead in final spring game

GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? The Fighting Sioux soccer team concluded their spring season Saturday with a tie against Minnesota State, Moorhead in front of a home crowd of 150 at Bronson Field.

UND took a 1-0 advantage in the first half when Veronika Zischka (Fr., Calgary, Alberta) took a shot from 30 yards out. Zischka's shot ricocheted off a defender and Sarah Penner (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) struck the ball, lofting it over the outstretched arms of the Dragon goalkeeper at the 15 minute mark to lift UND to a 1-0 lead.

The Dragons came back in the second half, equalizing the game in the 67th minute to end the 90 minute battle in a 1-1 tie.

Monica Stierman (So., Mahtomedi, Minn.) was in net for the Fighting Sioux throughout the first half while Lauren Sera (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) took over goalkeeping duties in the second period.

"We ended our spring season on a beautiful day for soccer, in a fantastic environment with fans lining the sideline to watch us play," said head coach Kristen Gay. "Our team has been training hard all winter/spring (since December) and we can't wait to for the fall season to see it all pay off."

The Fighting Sioux will kick off their second season as a Division I competitor, their first as a Great West Conference member, in August.
