Fighting Sioux in The Hockey News

GRAND FORKS, N.D.--The most recent edition of The Hockey News (May 11, 2009), the grand-daddy of all hockey publications, is a veritable one-stop shop for all things former Fighting Sioux.

  • The issue, the publication's awards issue, doled out its Cam Neely Award as the NHL's Breakout Player to New Jersey Devils forward and former UND All-American Zach Parise (2002-04). Parise achieved career highs this season in goals (45) and points (94).

According to THN, "It helped that linemates (and former Sioux) Travis Zajac and Jamie Langenbrunner also had great seasons, but there is little doubt Parise is the centerpiece of the unit and the offensive go-to player fo rthe Devils.

  • Parise was also the subject of THN's '2 Minutes in the Box' feature, in which he touches on his 'welcome to the NHL moment,' his favorite movie, his last non-hockey job, what's on his iPod and more.
  • Langenbrunner was cited as New Jersey's Comeback Player of the Year and THN observed that it was his linemates, former Sioux Parise and Zajac, "who played the biggest part in his career-best season of 29 goals and 69 points."

Said Langenbrunner: "They've made the game fun again."

Said Langenbrunner's mother(!), Patrice: "Jamie and Zach (Parise) come off the ice talking and smiling. I remember he used to do that as a kid. It's just so much for after all these years to see him enjoying himself."

  • Former Sioux defenseman Mike Commodore was tabbed by THN as Columbus' Comeback Player of the Year in 2008-09, noting Commodore "teamed with Jan Hejda to form one of the league's best shut-down pairs all season."
  • Forward Jason Blake, a two-time Hobey Baker Award finalist at UND, was named Toronto's Comeback Player of the Year after notching 25 goals and a career-high 38 assists for a team-leading 63 points.
  • In arguably the most interesting feature of the issue, THN looks at the 1999 draft, one that was littered with eventual first-round busts, and takes a crack at using hindsight to 're-draft' the first round. In its re-draft, THN has Commodore going eighth overall as the second defenseman taken.

In real life, Commodore was selected in the second round, 42nd overall, by New Jersey. He was UND's lone draft pick that year, the last time only one Sioux was selected.

  • THN also has a small feature on the successful inaugural season of the Dean Blais-led Fargo Force.
