GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Over 35 student-athletes on the 2009 University North Dakota football roster have family members who have participated in collegiate athletics. There are a few mothers, brothers, uncles, and cousins listed, but the majority of the athletes on the list are currently following in their father's football footsteps - or at least in their educational footsteps.
There are nine players on this year's roster who have family ties to the Fighting Sioux and of those nine, two have joined their fathers on the all-time Fighting Sioux football roster - Jake Landry and Ian McGurran. Landry's father Bill letter from 1974-75 and McGurran's father John lettered from 1980-82 and was team captain in '82.
For three other players, it was their brothers who paved the football path to UND. Marcus Tibesar's brother, Tim, played from 1993-96 and was twice named team captain. Seth Wisthoff's brother, David, lettered from 2001-04 and served as captain in '04 and Joel Schwenzfeier's brother, Aaron, was a three-time letterwinner from 2001-03.
Jeff Tescher is attending he father's alma mater, but he isn't following his exact steps. Tescher's father Jeff was a wrestler at UND and earned NCAA Division II All-American honors in 1981.
Steven Battle's grandfather, Tom Stannard, played on the UND gridiron, as did Tom's brother, Jim. Matt Bakke's uncle, Jim Hesketh, played on the UND baseball team and Ryan Kasowski's uncle, Dale, lettered at UND from 1972-75 and later went on to play for the Chicago Bears. His brother-in-law, Kelly Howe, played from 1996-99 and captained the '99 team.
