UND volleyball hires Torres to fill GA coaching role

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota head volleyball coach Ashley Hardee announced the hiring of Krystal Torres to handle graduate assistant coaching responsibilities for the Fighting Sioux volleyball program.

"Krystal was an All-American libero with me at New Mexico State and she brings a ton of high level experience to our gym,” Hardee said. “She'll work closely with our team on defense and passing. She was also a great competitor and I know she will get the most out of our players."

Torres comes to UND after spending the 2009 season as a volunteer assistant on the volleyball staff at Hawaii Pacific University.

Before Hawaii Pacific, Torres played volleyball at New Mexico State where she was selected to the Western Athletic All-Conference Team in three of her four seasons. She was named second team All-WAC in 2006 and first team All-WAC in 2007 and 2008. She holds the career record for digs at NMSU with 1,942.

Torres was named first team All-District by the AVCA and also earned honorable mention All-America honors from the organization.

During her sophomore year, she was also a member of the women's basketball team at NMSU. The Las Cruces, New Mexico, native graduated from Mayfield High School where she was a multi-sport athlete. As a senior, she was named a first team all-state selection in both volleyball and basketball.

Torres graduated with a degree in Kinesiology from New Mexico State in 2009 and is pursuing the same master's degree at UND. Her focus on both degrees will be exercise science.
