ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Fighting Sioux snapped a three-match losing skid with a convincing 6-1 win over Marist today during their annual Florida spring trip.
North Dakota was victorious in the No. 2 through No. 6 singles matches, with the final four wins coming in straight sets.
Freshman Callie Ronkowski (Grand Forks, N.D.) defeated Jonana Sun, 6-4 and 7-6, in No. 3 singles, while sophomore Hallie Welk (Bismarck, N.D.) took down Marielle Campbell by the same scores.
Freshman Stephanie Biehn (Sherburn, N.D.) defeated Jeannie Lukin, 6-4 and 6-3, and sophomore Chelsey Galipeau (Dickinson, N.D.) got past Retta Byron, 6-3 and 6-1.
Also, freshman Stephanie Petsis (Toronto, Ontario) won her No. 2 singles match against Kelsey Raynor by retirement.
UND claimed the doubles point with Petis and Biehn defeating Kayla O'Donovan and Erin McCarthy 8-2, and Swewen and Welk downing Campbell and Bryon 8-5.
The Sioux, now 5-6 on the season, will face NJIT on Tuesday.
"We won some close matches, especially Hallie
Welk in singles, and in doubles with Megan Sween," said UND coach Tom Wynne, "and those will hopefully be
confidence boosters for them as we play NJIT, which is the preseason
favorite to win the Great West Conference."
