GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team scored three first-half goals en route to a 3-2 victory over Idaho State on Sunday afternoon at Bronson Field.
With the win, UND improves to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-1 in Big Sky Conference action; marking the first time that North Dakota has won more than one conference game in a season since joining the Big Sky in 2013. On the other end of the field, Idaho State falls to 1-11-1 on the season and 0-4 in Big Sky play with the loss.
North Dakota opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a goal from Zoe Foster. Senior Kirsten Olson started the play as she carried the ball down the left flank before switching it over to Kaylee Kebba, who was in the right side of the box. Kebba then played the ball into the six-yard box, where Foster finished the transaction for her third goal of the season.
UND then added to its lead in the 24th minute when it was awarded its first corner kick of the game. Kennedy Kidd took the set piece for UND, but instead of placing the ball in play, her shot arched over Idaho State goalkeeper Sheridan Hapsic and into the back of the net for Kidd's second goal of the year.
With a two-goal lead, UND kept up the pressure and, less than three minutes later, was awarded with its third goal of the game. With a free kick in the UND half of the field, freshman defender Emma Contino booted the ball over the Idaho State back line, where Kebba was able to get a head on the ball for her second goal of the season.
To Idaho State's credit, the Bengals came out in the second half looking to equalize. North Dakota weathered the majority of the half without conceding a goal to the Bengals as they attempted 14 shots in the half, with 12 coming off the foot of Big Sky scoring leader Maria Sanchez.
Idaho State finally bent the North Dakota defense in the 84th minute, as Sanchez scored two goals, just 18 seconds apart. She scored ISU's first goal after being awarded a penalty kick. Her second goal came after winning a race to a through ball on top of the UND box.
However, North Dakota held strong after the two quick goals from Idaho State, squashing the Bengals late rally for the 3-2 win.
North Dakota hits the road for the next two weekends, with Southern Utah up next on the docket. UND takes on the Thunderbirds Friday, Oct. 9, in Cedar City, Utah.
