GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over Drake in its second game of the UND Classic at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Friday.
North Dakota, improving to 5-4 with the victory, hit for a combined .360, while the trio of Faith Dooley, Chelsea Moser, and Courtney Place combined for 39 kills.
“I was pretty pleased with everything except for probably the first 17 or 18 points,” head coach Mark Pryor said following the match. “I barked at them a little bit; I didn't like doing it, but sometimes you deserve it, and they responded exceptionally well. We had five hitting errors in the first 16 points; we had two the rest of the first set and the second set combined.
“I liked that we fought back in the third trying to finish it in three, and kind of conserve our legs for a really good South Dakota team tonight. That was a big thing. I thought our middles did a good job of exploiting some of the advantages that we have.”
After taking a 4-2 lead in the first set, UND found itself trailing, and did not move ahead again until a kill by Dooley gave the squad a 20-19 edge. Kills by Julia Kaczorowska and Moser pulled UND ahead, 22-20, and it didn't look back after that, finishing off the Bulldogs, 25-22, to complete the set.
In the second set, UND went on an 11-0 run early to jump out to a 14-5 lead. Three kills from Kaczorowska and two from Dooley led the way there. The Bulldogs would pull within six, cutting it to a 20-14 UND lead, but a kill from Dooley and three attack errors on Drake stretched the score to 24-14.
North Dakota finished off the set with a 25-17 victory, and hit for a combined .533, its best percentage in the match's three sets.
In the third set, UND found itself in an 11-6 hole, but climbed back to within three after a kill and service ace from Moser and a kill from Dooley. Place's kill tied things up at 18-18, and a service ace from Denae Dominguez pulled the home side ahead, but Drake again jumped out to a lead shortly afterwards.
After a kill from Place tied the score at 20 apiece, Moser served and forced an attack error on the visitors' side, and UND never looked back from the 21-20 lead. It finished off the set, 25-21, and swept the Bulldogs for the second time this season.
Dooley's 15 kills and five blocks led UND, while Moser and Place each notched 12 kills of their own. Sydney Griffin racked up 46 assists, and McKenzie Hart finished with 19 digs for the green and white.
As a team, North Dakota held Drake to just one team block, while finishing with eight of its own.
UND has now won its first two games of the UND Classic and returns to the court tonight for its third game of the tournament. The team will face South Dakota at 7:30 p.m. (CT) at Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in the last of five tilts on the day.
