GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Friday's slate of matches ended exactly the way it began for the University of North Dakota women's volleyball team: with another 3-0 sweep in the UND Classic, this time against South Dakota, at Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
“I thought what we did was we were just physically bigger and higher in a couple of spots,” head coach Mark Pryor said of how the team matched South Dakota's skill. “That allowed us to take advantage of some things with our middles and then especially being able to go to the outside as fast as we were able to. That was due to Lauren Clarke, Denae Dominguez, and McKenzie Hart really keeping things in system.”
North Dakota (6-4) has now won its last four matches, and has only lost two sets total over those four wins.
UND battled to a 25-19 win in the first set behind seven team blocks and a .303 hitting percentage. The team jumped out to a 5-1 start and never looked back from that, controlling the set the whole way.
By the time North Dakota had opened up a 12-6 lead, it had already racked up four blocks, including three from Chelsea Moser. UND finished the night with 12 team blocks, and Faith Dooley led the way there with eight to her name.
“We'd been working on it and working on it and it was something that hadn't clicked,” Pryor said of the team's blocking. “Finally it did, and then all of a sudden it was like the floodgates opened up a little bit.
“That really set the tone because they really got tentative in the last two sets after seeing we got a hold of them [seven] times.”
Two kills by Julia Kaczorowska and two attack errors on the Coyotes gave UND another 4-1 lead to start the second set. The team worked its way up to a 20-13 lead, its biggest of the set, and continued to hold off South Dakota after that. A big block from Dooley brought North Dakota within one point of the win. Moser then finished it off with one of her team-leading 12 kills on the night as UND took the second set, 25-17.
It was the Coyotes that would take an early lead in the third set, starting off on a 6-2 run. A 3-0 run by North Dakota helped the team find its way back and tie things up at 10-10, thanks to a kill from Dooley, a service ace from Amanda Harnett, and another kill from Courtney Place.
The two teams stayed within one point of each other after that until two South Dakota errors gave UND a 17-15 edge. The Coyotes took the next point, but North Dakota then went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a kill and a service ace from Harnett. That gave UND a commanding 22-16 lead, and the green and white held on to clinch the match with a 25-19 win in the set.
North Dakota hit for .308 on the night, and held South Dakota to just a .045 hitting percentage. Through the first two sets, the Coyotes were hitting at just .012 combined.
Moser's 12 kills on Friday night give her 35 total for the tournament so far. She's also hitting for .446 and has committed only six attack errors throughout the UND Classic.
McKenzie Hart led the way for UND once again with 16 digs, and Place had 10 of her own to go along with seven kills. Setter Sydney Griffin had another big match for the team with 37 assists.
North Dakota will take on Jacksonville State tomorrow afternoon in its final game of the UND Classic. Match time is set for 12 p.m. (CT) at Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
