GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota women's volleyball team remained perfect at the UND Classic with a 3-0 sweep over Jacksonville State in its final match, taking home the team title at the tournament.
North Dakota (7-4) went undefeated at the tournament, posting a 4-0 record, and now holds an 8-0 all-time record at the UND Classic under head coach Mark Pryor.
“They've worked really hard,” head coach Mark Pryor said of the team's performance over the past week. “One week ago right now, we were 1-4. One and four. And they've really done a good job of just grinding it out, and understanding it's a process. We're 7-4 now; we'll enjoy that until Monday and then Monday we're 0-0 and we'll get back to work.”
In the first set, the two clubs stayed within a point of each other through the first five points, but a block from Amanda Harnett and Chelsea Moser and a kill from Moser helped UND take a 7-5 lead. With North Dakota later holding an 11-10 edge, two blocks combined from Faith Dooley and Sydney Griffin and a Courtney Place service ace helped the team jump out to a 14-0 lead.
Eventually, North Dakota built its lead up to 23-17, but a 5-0 Gamecocks run followed suit. A kill by Place brought UND within one point of the win after that, and Jacksonville State then committed an attack error to give North Dakota the victory in the first set, 25-22.
UND started the second set ripping off six of the first seven points, forcing the Gamecocks to call a timeout. After a kill from Jacksonville State, North Dakota went on a 6-2 run to take a commanding 12-4 lead; that run was highlighted by two kills from Moser and a service ace from Denae Dominguez.
North Dakota continued to dominate the set and went on to win, 25-16, and hit for a combined .395.
Dooley started the third set off with a kill to give UND a 1-0 lead right away, but the Gamecocks quickly gained a 3-1 lead for themselves. Two consecutive kills from Place helped North Dakota take control again at 8-6.
A big 9-0 run came next for the team, putting UND ahead 18-8. Moser chipped in with two service aces, while Julia Kaczorowska had two blocks and a kill for herself. Place had a big third set with seven kills to finish tied for the team lead with 12 in the match. Kristen Giesbrecht notched the match point for the home side as North Dakota won the set, 25-18, to cap off the sweep.
With the 4-0 showing at the tournament, North Dakota has now won its last five matches and its last 10 sets. The team has lost only two sets over the span of those five wins.
Moser also tied for the UND lead with 12 kills today and hit for .364. She notched a total of 47 kills and a hitting percentage of .425 in the UND Classic, to go along with 10 blocks and just 10 errors.
McKenzie Hart finished the afternoon with 22 digs for UND, and Griffin came up with seven of her own to go along with 43 assists in the match. As a team, North Dakota racked up eight blocks, and Dooley, Moser, and Kaczorowska each collected four.
UND returns to action on Sept. 16 against Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn., and then heads to St. Louis, Mo., for the Billiken Invitational from Sept. 18-19.
