ST. LOUIS, Mo.-- North Dakota committed just four attack errors as a team in a clean 25-9, 25-15, 25-15 sweep of Tennessee-Martin Friday afternoon to open the Billiken Invitational. It marked the 10th time that UND has posted single digits in attack errors since the arrival of head coach Mark Pryor and is the lowest total in the school's Division I era (since 2008).
"This match was a good opportunity for us to get some younger players in," Pryor said. "It was nice to see them play a little more calm and collected. It was nice to see us side out as well as we did and keep our hitting errors low."
Low would accurately describe UND's attack-error total in the win. Four errors for the match are the lowest output for the team in recent history and its hitting percentage (.426) was the highest since a sweep of North Dakota State (.500) in 2013. North Dakota made just one miscue in each of the first and final sets with two in the second. UND was consistent on the attack, posting 15 kills in each of the first two sets and 14 more in the third to hit a combined .426 for the match.
In fact, UND never trailed the entire match. North Dakota jumped out early in all three sets, leading 8-1 in the first, 3-0 in the middle frame and 7-1 in the final set to set the tone each time.
Sophomore setter Sydney Griffin handed out 35 assists in the sweep, including a pair to Julia Spacek, who notched two kills in her collegiate debut. Grace Bettenga also tied a career-high with two kills as UND was afforded the opportunity to expand its bench. All told, 12 players saw the floor for North Dakota in its eighth straight victory, tying its longest streak under Pryor at UND.
Julia Kaczorowska led UND in kills for the second straight match, recording nine. Courtney Place and Chelsea Moser each chipped in seven without an error between them. McKenzie Hart (21 digs) and Lauren Clarke (10 digs) patrolled the back row.
North Dakota faces host Saint Louis University Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.
