Four different goal scorers pace UND past Southern

Fighting Hawks win back-to-back road matches to open season for first time since 2005

Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. – Battling the Louisiana heat, an unfamiliar opponent, and a long lightning delay, the University of North Dakota soccer team conquered every challenge thrown its way to defeat Southern University, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon in Baton Rouge, La.

UND (2-0-0) starts the season with two wins for the second straight season under Head Coach Chris Logan, a feat never accomplished in the Division I era. The Fighting Hawks have also won their first two games on the road for the first time since 2005 when the team won three consecutive away from Grand Forks to begin the year.

"I'm happy with where we are right now," said Logan. "Anytime you can come away with two big wins away from your pitch against a pair of quality road opponents is good, especially when we get lots of offense and don't concede any."

After scoring a pair of goals in the opening eight minutes of Friday at Nicholls State, the visitors started with an attack-first mentality again. Emma Contino broke the scoreless tie with a goal off a set piece when teammate Megan Wright curled a perfect corner into the box and the defender headed the ball into the back of the cage for a 1-0 UND lead.

Later in the first half it was Wright finishing off an in-bounds play when the sophomore tallied her second-career goal off a throw from Brittnay Mueller to quickly double the lead for the Fighting Hawks heading into the locker room.

Just minutes into the second half, play was halted for more than 90 minutes due to lightning in the area.

While many would believe that the long delay would slow down the visitors; however, the opposite happened as UND struck for back-to-back tallies just moments after play was restarted to push the lead to four.

"I thought our attacking players left their shooting shoes on the bus for the opening 65 minutes," lamented Logan. "We had to refocus things on the soccer-specific side of things and those 25 minutes were the best we have looked all season and that's the team I want to trot out there every game."

Katie Moller scored her second goal in as many games when the senior danced around two defenders and the goalkeeper for the third tally of the afternoon for the Fighting Hawks. Moller has now scored in six of her last eight regular season matches dating back to last season.

Mimi Eiden put the finishing touches on the victory with her first goal of the season when the sophomore struck off a ball into the attacking area from Moller to cap off a perfect trip to the Bayou State to begin the season.

Olivia Swenson turned in her second clean sheet in her many games to help UND with a strong 75-minute performance while Jacqueline Wells played the final 15 minutes of action to keep the Jaguars (0-1-0) off the scoreboard.
