GRAND FORKS, N.D. - After splitting its opening weekend of Summit League play, the University of North Dakota will hit the road this week for a pair of conference tilts at Purdue Fort Wayne (Oct. 10) and Western Illinois (Oct. 13).
North Dakota hosted South Dakota last Thursday at Bronson Field in a cold and muddy affair that resulted in a 2-1 UND triumph thanks to an 89th-minute goal by
Emma Bangert. The Hawks game-winner came just 72 seconds after the Coyotes equalized the match on a penalty kick.
Mimi Eiden opened the scoring as she dribbled up the center of the pitch while holding off three defenders in the process.
The Fighting Hawks followed up Sunday at South Dakota State, holding the Summit League's preseason No. 2 scoreless in the opening 45 minutes of play. The Jackrabbits responded with three second-half goals, including two in the opening 15 minutes of play to defeat UND, 3-0.
The Mastodons opened the season with a 4-1-1 clip - its best start to a season in program history - but currently sit at 4-5-2 overall with a 0-1-0 record in The Summit League. The Mastodons have split scoring duties among three players as Hannah Kroger, Eliese LaCourt, and Morgan Reitano have each posted two goals this season.
Kroger, one of the team's scoring leader with five points, has accounted for two game-winning goals for the Dons, posting the deciding goals against Chicago State (Aug. 30) and Valparaiso (Sept. 13).
One season after going winless in Summit League play, the Leathernecks are a perfect 2-0 in conference play with a perfect 2-0-0 record and a 6-5-1 overall record. Western Illinois has won its last four matches, posting shutouts in its previous three matches.
Defeating Omaha in the conference opener, WIU is coming off a 2-0 win over PFW. Amy Andrews has scored five goals this season, including three game-winners.
UND will return home on Oct. 17 when it hosts Oral Roberts in the Hawks only match of the week.
