Fighting Hawks Head to WIU for Summit League Championship

GRAND FORKS, N.D.
- After an abbreviated outdoor season, the North Dakota track & field team will test its might against the rest of the conference this week as it embarks upon The Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Western Illinois' Hanson Field May 8-10.

Fans planning on traveling to the event can buy the all-session pass (three days) for $10 or a daily pass at $5. Children age 3 or under are free. Fans will also be able to follow live results online.

This week's meet will be the first-ever Summit League Outdoor Championship competition for the Fighting Hawks, who placed fifth on the men's and women's side at the indoor championships in February. The women were a mere four points from third place, scoring 75 points.

There was no time off for UND between the indoor and outdoor season as Molli Detloff and Kyley Foster represented the University at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, earning second-team All-America on March 9. Only five days later, the Fighting Hawks - including Detloff and Foster - were competing in San Antonio, Texas at the University of Incarnate Word's Spring Break Invitational.

The Fighting Hawks were scheduled to compete each weekend until April 25 during their outdoor campaign but found themselves with a weekend off due to the forces of nature as Winter Storm Wesley (April 11-13 ) pummeled the region with ice and snow, forcing Minnesota and the University of Mary to cancel their scheduled meets.

The heavy competition schedule and the adverse weather did not slow UND down, however, as 43 athletes rank in the top-10 in The Summit League in their respective events, including 13 in the top-5 heading into this weekend's competition.

The stiff competition field is highlighted by the women's hammer throw event as six athletes currently rank in the NCAA West Region, including the conference leader Detloff. North Dakota's two time All-American ranks eighth nationally with her season-best 216-11 (66.11m) and will be seeking her first conference championship in the event.

While the championship will be UND's first in The Summit, it will be the final conference championship for Head Coach Kevin Galbraith and Head Cross Country Coach Dick Clay. Galbraith began his tenure as head coach in 2011 while Clay will be finishing his 34th year with the program.
